Do you have pets or children? Perhaps one or both walked across, sat on, sat something on top of the Kindle. You don't carry it in a pocket do you? Do you keep it in a cover or case/sleeve? Have you dropped it? Did the Kindle undergo extreme temperature changes in a short amount of time?

Lot of questions. I've owned 8 Kindles over the years and several Sony readers as well. I've never had a screen break, but I'm very careful with my Kindles. The Kindles do have a glass substrate and it can be broken if you or a pet or a child is too rough with it, but under normal conditions that should not happen.

I take my Kindle everywhere, including in and out in the coldest weather. Never a problem there. All three times the screen cracked, it was inside, and I knew I had done it.

I am as well. I think some people are just clumsier than others, no matter how careful.

I never cracked the screen of a Palm device (what I used for mobile reading pre-Kindle), I guess because small displays are less fragile.

As for the OP -- a slightly, but fatally, damaged screen might be readable at first and then worsen. Could that have happened?

It sounds like Amazon replaced it for free, so all is well.

Amazon is making a business decision to replace large numbers of cracked screens rather than use gorilla glass or one of it competitors. Unlike most here, I would have been glad to pay more for a device I thought could last five or -- gulp -- ten years.
