Metadata download batches

There was a short period of time when Calibre was breaking up large metadata downloads into batches of 100 or so. That was actually a really nice feature here in the land of unreliable third world public wifi.

Is there any kind of tweak to re-enable that?

I have no reason to try currently, but I thought that was the current state of calibre. Aren't metadata download jobs currently handed off to the Job queue in lots of 100. I thought that if you trird to download metadata for 600 books at one time then 6 jobs are queued up of 100 books each job. It has been a while since I tried it so I could be misremembering things.

What happens when you try this?

If I start a download on 600 it shows one job with 600 books. Since my connection speed and uptime vary a lot I might get that done in a reasonable amount of time, or I might have to shut down and pack up early, or the router might shut down and pack up early.

The 100 book batch limit for metadata downloads was implemented in August 2011 due to a memory management problem. The ultimate solution for the memory problem was corrected in April 2012 as shown in the below quote. This means that if you prefer smaller batches then you have to manually select smaller batches on your own.

Release: 0.8.46 [06 Apr, 2012]

Bug Fixes
  • Run metadata downloads in a separate process to workaround memory leaks in third party plugins. Also removes the need to break up bulk metadata downloads into 100 book batches.

Yeah, I was aware of the history. I suppose I should have expounded in my post.

Can't be re-enabled though, thanks for the confirmation
