Sending borrowed books to a Kobo

Hi,

I am trying to get books borrowed through Borrowbox onto my Kobo. Borrowbox downloads a .acsm file as the books expire after three weeks.

I understand that if I open a .acsm file in Adobe Digital Editions then I can add the resulting epub to calibre and send it to my already authorised reader where I can then read it. However, when I tried this with a book borrowed from Borrowbox it told me that the loan had expired. I can open the book in Calibre and the Kobo still reports that it is authorised to the correct account.

Is there something else I need to do with borrowed books?

I am using Adobe Digital Editions under wine on Ubuntu.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

You could try to send the book to Your Kobo directly from ADE. After all this is the way that ADE should work.

If it doesn't work I don't know how help You, I have no experience with Wine, I have dual boot Ubuntu/Windows 10 so I use ADE with Windows.

And You could try to fire off and light on Your Kobo. May be it is not usefull but it is so easy to do...

I have a suggestion. Try ADE under Windows. I have no experience with ADE under Wine. But I know that under Windows, ADE works properly.

Your best way is to use ADE to transfer the borrowed books to your Kobo.

To do this you will need to plug your Kobo in then, open ADE then use winecfg to manually mount your Kobo in wine. Then you can transfer books using ADE.

https://askubuntu.com/questions/3142...-drive-to-wine
Quote:
1. run winecfg
2. go to the "Drives" tab
3. click "Add..."
4. chose your favorite letter
5. find the "Path:" text field and click the "Browse..." button next to that
6. find wherever your operating system has mounted the flash drive. In Ubuntu it'll be under /media
7. select your flash drive's mount point
8. click "OK" and then "OK" again.

I have tried using ADE but it won't recognise my Kobo. Annoyingly it used to but has been increasingly bad about finding it so I was hoping to find a more reliable way of doing it. I don't have access to Windows otherwise I would just do it there!

In winecfg everything is fine. My Kobo is there pretending to be a floppy disc drive (I've also tried all the other options). It just doesn't seem to actually fool ADE.

Quolia, you could buy Windows 10 and setup a dual-boot system.

Are you gonna buy or send him the $139 needed to purchase a Windows 10 license?

Or £5 on eBay. Acceptable risk, if it only has to work for this one app.
Actually a not activated windows with a local only account will do fine. No key needed. All it does is nag a little , easilly ignored. It does not ever actually stop working. A few optional personalisation features are not available when not activated, but all the core functionality is there

This is from the Wine AppDb:

Note for ADE 2.0.1

Using an eReader with ADE

Also thanks to Kevin for the note on persistent drive mapping with winecgf.

Note: The writer of this how-to (lafon) is recreating the steps outlined by Lukasz with a KOBO eReader. However the steps should be the same for all similar devices.

Note: Do NOT open ADE until clearly outlined in this how-to!

1) Mount your device and make note of it's mount point (This needs to be remembered exactly). For me this was /media/KOBOeReader/

2) The next step is to unmount your eReader (This is because winecfg cannot seem to keep the changes applied if the device is mounted).

3) Next open winecfg and switch to the [Drives] tab.

4) On the [Drives] tab click the "Show Advanced" button.

Note: As outlined in the comment by Kevin, WINE does not seem to have persistent drive mapping while the device is mounted. Therefore you have 2 options. Either the messy way, which is to keep the winecfg window open while ADE runs, or unmount and create a persistent entry.

5) Click the "Add" button.

6) Choose a letter to map your device to (I used "O:" because that was the only letter available to me.)

7) In the "Path" box, type the mount point from step 1.

8) In the "Type" drop-down menu, choose "Floppy disk" as the option.

9) Click "OK".

10) Open ADE. If everything went correctly ADE should ask you to authorize your eReader with your Adobe account (if you authorized your computer anonymously you will be asked to authorize your computer too). To read eBooks on your device simply drag-and-drop books from your ADE library to the entry in the left pane of ADE that corresponds with your eReader.

11) Finally remember to safely dismount your device from your computer.
Good luck!

It's not a dead horse to give a solution that is a working solution. It may not be what you want to hear, but Windows will work with ADE.

Yes I could do that. Or I could just buy the books from the Kobo store rather than borrowing them from my public library.

Thanks for that . ADE is still not finding my Kobo. I'm probably going to have to admit defeat!

This issue is just one more reason Windows works better with eBooks then Linux.

A thing You could try is to use on that book the "Modify ePub" plugin and check the "Remove Adobe resource DRM meta tags" square.
