Alf has updated the tools again. There are also some new blog posts.

I'm not permitted to give a link, but googling for Apprentice Alf's Blog should turn it up pretty quickly.

Improvements seem to be mainly for Kindle and especially the Topaz format.

Oh - and for Linux users.

Except for announcements here, how can you keep up to date with the good Apprentice without regular visits to the blog?

By making regular visits to the blog . That is the only way, to the best of my knowledge.

Subscribing to the RSS feed will alert you to new posts, if you use a newsreader, and comments on new posts. I don't think it works for edited posts, where the tools sometimes appear.

If you post a question or answer to the blog there is a checkmark to get email notifications also.

Are they still needlessly broken for linux?

I looked into them a year or two ago and they did not work. I found a script that essentially went like this:

if (evil_spawn_of_microsoft) { do_this() }
else if (evil_spawn_of_apple) {do_that() }

I changed the latter to linux and they worked just fine. The mac specific parts were actually unix specific. I did not feel comfortable to register on the site nor confident that I could convince that the gratuitous incompatibilty be removed.

Warning to users: there has been a name change so you should remove the previous version before loading the new version. And yes, save your customizations.

Linux has always been supported. I use almost all of the tools with Linux, so I'm not sure where you've gotten the idea they're needlessly broken.

I don't see anything about a name change, or requirement to remove the previous equipment. Could you let me know more, please, by private message if you can't do it on the forum?

Think they may be talking about the name change (version #). Also your customization for your serial # for Mobi plugin is in a new spot so make sure you copy it over. I just hightlighted mine and copied and pasted.

I see that Alf has just updated to 5.3, to fix a problem with the new edition of Kindle for Mac, and to fix a problem with using the Kindle plugin under Linux.

As for keeping up-to-date, as well as an RSS subscription to posts (not a lot of use, since new posts are few and far between) there's an RSS subscription for comments. Just ignore any that aren't from Apprentice Alf.

The comments feed for a particular post is exactly how I keep abreast of things.

What IS the Differences in Tools 5.1 & 5.2??
