Calibre and Kindle

Is it likely that Calibre Collections will be implemented to work with the new Kindle Paperwhite? I'm thinking of switching from Sony but really need Collections/Series to work as I use Calibre for all my library needs.

It is all down to the firmware and how much Amazon lock it down. I certainly wouldn't count on it based on what they did with the K4 Touch models last year. But no-one will know for sure until someone actually gets one and is able to figure out how collections are stored on them...

I understand your pain. I always said until another device is as integrated into calibre as the Sony devices are I was going to stick with Sony.

I just purchased a Asus Nexus 7 because the developer responsible for much of the Sony integration was about to write an Android app (Calibre Companion) with his son to integrate calibre and Android devices. I wasn't disappointed. The Automatic metadata management, collections, series etc.. just work.

I am 53 years old, had Lasik surgery on the eyes and I am extremely sensitive to backlit screens so I didn't expect this to be my new reading device. I was wrong.

I am able to drop the brightness of the display way down. I use Moon+ Reader which has a slew of options and multiple themes. I use a variation on their Nature theme for normal reading and a variation of one of their night time themes for reading in bed. I say variation because I have adjusted font sizes and on one theme even font color to get things where I want them then saved my settings. Another plus of Moon+ Reader is the ability to easily swipe the left edge and adjust the display brightness from within the actual book.

The Paperwhite looks great, but losing the full integration you experience with your Sony device could hurt. Wait for it to come out and see how things develop.

Good Reading!

The issue, to be more specific, is that on the Kindle Touch the collections data is stored on a hidden internal partition, not on the "drive" that mounts when you connect the Kindle to your PC, hence there's no way for any Calibre plugin to get at that data in order to modify it.

The indications are that the Paperwhite uses the same firmware as the Kindle Touch, so one might reasonably expect that the same issue will exist on the PW. We'll know in a few weeks when people get their hands on the device.

If you're willing to jailbreak your Kindle, we have a pretty neat workflow working for managing collections on the Touch, now (with or without Calibre/meme's Kindle Collections plugin). Look for ixtab's Collections Manager in the Kindle Dev subforum .

It doesn't necessarily mean it'll be doable on the PW, but there's hope, at least .
