Register a Kindle on the website?

Hi all!

I'm setting up a Kindle Keyboard for a gift for my mum.

Background: I took a risk on buying one secondhand (3G Kindles are far too expensive here) - the seller had excellent feedback for similar devices, displayed a photo with the serial number visible, and was openly responding to email. I can't find any indication that's it's a stolen device. (How would I know?)

I'm tearing my hair out a bit at the registration process. So far:

- I've made Mum an Amazon account on the web, with an email address I can transfer to her.

- I've factory reset the Kindle, and done the alt-EQQ (311) process in Settings to automatically connect to local 3G (I'm in Australia). I've also connected it to my local wireless network.

- The Kindle is seeing my wifi and I think Whispernet (of the five black bars, I have four) quite happily, and I can browse Wikipedia and the New York Times on the inbuilt browser. But every time I try to put in her registration details on the device, it tells me that it is "unable to connect at this time".

- I have googled for help for this, and people keep saying that you can register the Kindle by putting in the serial number at the Manage My Kindle webpage at Amazon - but I can't for the life of me find that option where they say it is. (There's no "Register a Kindle" in the left sidebar.) Has this changed/been moved around?

- Firmware seems to be 3.0.2. "Sync & Check for Items" is greyed out.

Any other help would be appreciated. I've not adminned a Kindle before, but I'm pretty experienced with my Kobo.

Here is a good place to start. You can deregister a Kindle on the MYK page but you can't register one. The error message you're getting is troubling. I suspect you will need to contact Kindle support. Try the instructions on the link and see what happens.

Hi - thanks for the link - it just takes me through the steps I've done already. Cheers for trying.

If all else fails, I can just throw books onto it with Calibre, right?

Yes, that should work. Hopefully you can get it registered though.

Contact Kindle customer service. They are very helpful indeed.

You might try shutting wireless off and trying with only 3g and vice versa. Otherwise, as TimW mentioned, contact Kindle support. You needn't have bought it directly from Amazon to do this.

Meeera, if you scroll to the top of the page on the link I gave you there is a yellow "Contact Us" button. If you click on that and follow the prompts, that should get some help from Kindle CS for you.

So, are you trying to register off the browser, or thru the menu-Menu- Settings- Register-?

Strange the browser works, but then gives the "Cannot Connect" message.

I SWEAR I registered my last 2nd-hand Kindle thru the website. Clearly remember entering the crazy alpha-numeric serial from the K. But I cannot find how to do that now. Was only earlier this summer I did that.

Bought 2 used kindles & registered NP! So, IDK?!?

Amazon removed the register a kindle from their website. I called and spoke with a customer service rep and as of today you have to register on the device itself..

How strange. Last week the link was on the Manage Your Kindle page, and - sure enough - today it is gone.

You must register through the device, itself. If the serial number matches a reported stolen or lost one, you will not be able to register the device.

If that happens and you used Paypal to pay for the device on eBay, you can call Paypal and block the payment to the seller. Then return it to the seller for your money back.

uugh -- it's going to be hard to get my Mom's Kindle registered for her when she's 4 hours away and I have to have the device in my hand.

Hopefully she doesn't screw it up again anytime soon.
