kindle for PC - bok downloads then deletes itself
I continue to have issues with K for PC latest version ( on Windows 7 64 bit) & Amazon continue to be clueless about the cause.
whenever I buy a new book there is a strong change that it will NOT appear in K for PC, unless I de-register & re-register my install. I have only 1 instance of K for PC , only on one PC, & have removed all traces of older versions and all references to other installs on the Amazon manage kindle pages. I used to do complete un installs, until I discovered that un registering & re-registering was usually sufficient to temporally fix delivery issues in today's case, I watched the K for PC program launch after buying the book , watched the book cover Icon appear and a blue progress bar fill beneath it, & then saw the book vanish before I could open it I reproduced this several times by forcing another delivery from manage my kindle pages. called up A. ( since thy say call them when I email about the issue) but all they could suggest was uninstall / reinstall the software. rather than do that AGAIN ( have done it several times before & have also cleaned out app data, registry etc.) , I just did the registration fix as explained above & got my book OK. has anyone else experienced similar problems or found an explanation. I did notice, after the event, that my "My Kindle Content" folder was set to read only - could this be a factor . It also seems to happen with AZW3 books more so than with .MOBI? My windows install had no file assoc. for AZW3 so I set one a few days ago, to link that format to K 4PC - does not seem to have made any difference to delivery issues . I am wondering if amazon's server sometimes sends the book file but not the associated key file(s) and thus the download fails Last edited by cybmole; 09-07-2012 at 08:16 PM. |

Are the files showing up in the folder? Maybe the program is having trouble finding them. Maybe there's a problem converting the temp files to permanent files. I had a problem with an iTunes podcast. It would download, start to process, and disappear without an error message. I figured out that there was an error in the original file. |

Hi cybmole
I had something similar behavior some time ago. I had to go to My Kindle Content folder, find the new book and double click it to view it in K4PC. Then it was present in the books list. Might not be your issue. |

thanks for feedback guys, but:
1. in the my kindle content folder I found only a small support file ( I forget the extension, maybe .apn- but no .azw file. 2. the fact that it worked after de/re-registering the app suggests no fault in amazon's copy of the file. IF I knew more about what actually happens when you de-register+ delete local content, then re-register, then maybe I'd get further. I see a lot of obscure stuff in the APP data folder but cannot find out what it does. if there's some library content control in there & it get's out of sync with amazon servers, but gets reset on de-re register then maybe that is where the problem lies ? there is a STORAGE sub folder and a CACHE/DB subfolder in ..appdata/local/amazon/kindle... K4PC is a pain to debug as amazon offer no help / no tools & there's little documentation of how it works. MY current theory is that K4PC will delete a book if it can't reconcile its DRM key which what is needed for the book i.e. if K4PC deduces that it's not "My" book ( just like it does if you delete a book from your amazon "owned" list and then re-sync ) - so I think that my registrations are messed up somehow at amazon. the book "arrives" in K4PC but there is somethign wrong with its credentials. But getting amazon to look in to that is another challenge...they say they have passed it on to their engineers; we'll see. I asked if they had any knowledgebase of faults & solutions - it seems not PS how can I search here for threads on Kindle for PC - the search engine ejects both for and PC Last edited by cybmole; 09-08-2012 at 02:35 AM. |
