Kobo and Calibre

I have read that Calibre and Kobo 2.0 do not get along. I have not updated my Kobo to 2.0, nor have I updated Calibre in several weeks for fear of encountering a problem. Can anyone confirm whether there still are issues using Calibre with Kobo 2.0 and if so, are there any plans to address them in Calibre?

There are NO issues with cali9bre and version 2.0 firmware that were not present witb any previous version of the firmware.

Please just check the option in the device prferecnes to support a newer firmware version.

I'm using a Kobo Touch w/ firmware 2.1.1 and everything works fine with the latest Calibre. No issues at all.

As soon as I updated to 2.0 I have had nothing but problems. Problems that weren't there before. My ereader now only recognizes 4 pages in my library when there are actually 30. When I connect to calibre my Kobo updates itself and I can see everything again but as soon as I turn it off and on again it's back to only about 5% of the books that are on it. Must say I am dissapointed as I have had it for over a year and have had no real problems.

I updated Kobo and at first it seems to work better with Calibre. Then I tried to add more books a week ago and now it's pretty much crashed out. It freezes on processing content and I haven't been able to read anything over a week. Numerous resets and factory resets, no go...

I just updated to the newest version of Calibre (0.8.67) and have a Kobo Touch running 2.0.0, and I now get this message when I connect:

Quote:
calibre, version 0.8.67
WARNING: Failed: Kobo database version unsupported - See details

Your Kobo is running an updated firmware/database version. As calibre does not know about this updated firmware, database editing is disabled, to prevent corruption. You can still send books to your Kobo with calibre, but deleting books and managing collections is disabled. If you are willing to experiment and know how to reset your Kobo to Factory defaults, you can override this check by right clicking the device icon in calibre and selecting "Configure this device" and then the "Attempt to support newer firmware" option. Doing so may require you to perform a factory reset of your Kobo.
Has anyone seen this before? Is it safe to use the "Attempt to support newer firmware" option?

Edit: I just re-read this thread and saw that PeterT said to select the newer firmware option, so I went ahead and did it, no issues. I never had to do that with any previous updates so I was concerned when I saw it.

I think this warning was introduced as the maintainer of the Kobo driver for Calibre is not currently active. This means that the driver is not being enhanced for newer Kobo firmware versions. As long as the database format does not change you are OK, but if it does this a warning that the results will be unpredicatable.

This is a good post to reply to about the Kobo Touch database.

The database has changed, but not in a way that affects the drivers interaction with it. Some new tables have been added for bookshelf support and some new columns added to the existing tables. calibre doesn't need to go near these columns. There might be an issue if the driver was trying to insert or update rows in the tables, but it doesn't. Deleting a book is the only time the driver updates the database. This is fine. It leaves the bookshelf rows behind, but the device will clean these up.

There is one issue with the new firmware that isn't there for the old firmware. The Kobo is inconsistent with how it stores dates in the database. They are actually strings but some are stored with milliseconds and some without. And some have timezone info. The different formats used seems to be related to the book format. PDFs and CBR/CBZ files can have a format that the driver doesn't expect and throws an exception. If this happens, the device list is incomplete.

But, it appears that problem has gone away. I just looked at the source for this, and it wasn't what I remembered. Looks like Kovid has put a fix in for this. It is dated 29/8 but wasn't listed in last weeks fixes. But, a quick test shows it was included and solves that issue.

I have just bought a Kobo e-reides and up-graded it to 2.0. No problems transferring books to this reader with Calibre.
