Question Which E-Reader for NZ

Our only choice to purchase actually in NZ is the Kobo (I believe please correct me if I'm wrong).
Does anyone know of any other e-reader that can be purchased locally or easily via the web? Kindle is out as they don't deliver here.

I'm another that isn't interested in the extra's ie the wifi purely because not so easy to setup here and I suspect I would all to easily overspend my budget.

The main reason for an e-reader is to funnily enough read lol. I do some book review's and recieve a lot of these in pdf format so also need advise on how best to convert these to be easily read on the e-reader I choose.

Thanks for any advise.

If the Kobo's what you can get, then probably the Kobo's what you should get.

There's zero support for NZ from Amazon (I think I once read some sort of crazy geo-restriction justification for why), obviously the Nook is out, and you may or may not have a problem getting one of the Sony or other readers in your area if they don't already sell them in the local electronics shops.

Kobo will read PDF, you can purchase from any stores willing to sell to NZ using the ADE DRM, check out Overdrive library ebooks if you've any available in your area, and there's plenty of free public domain stuff out there should you want to read the classics (or happen to like science fiction & fantasy, which can often be found in DRM-free MultiFormat).

It is kind of barebones as readers go, but you've said you don't need wi-fi or extra features, and paying shipping/import taxes on a fancier model could easily eat into your budget.

And although there's firmware issues and such, the Kobo people seem to be generally decent at offering support and trying with the fixes, and some of their tech people even post to the Kobo forum here.

In short, I think the Kobo may be the best choice out of an admittedly limited selection for you.

When I visited Australia and New Zealand in January, a fair number of folks mentioned wanting Kindles and being bummed they could not get them in NZ. Several mentioned that they worked around this by ordering one in Australia. They said they were downloading books using the USB cord.

It is not a perfect solution but it seems to work. My guess is that the same work around would work for any number of e-readers.

Also, there are plenty of stores that you can buy e-books from that are not Amazon, B&N, or Sony. So the regional restriction does not limit you to free books.

just done some more searching and found somewhere that has Pocketbooks for sale here any thoughts on these?

At this stage is really looking like the Kobo purely for support etc. Really wish we had more of a selection lol.

Hi Emmad,
If you consider shipping from overseas, I would suggest to check PocketBook models. We have many happy clients from Australia/New Zealand and some of them came from this forum
Thanks,
Tatiana

Wait no longer - Kindle 3 can now be shipped to NZ. I have just pre-ordered. At USD 139.-, I believe it is unbeatable. Of course, it also has the new Pearl screen.

This will make my PRS-505 obsolete, which is rather sad.

Wow looked up the price for the K3 and even with purchasing the case, adding shipping and converting to US$ is still cheaper than purchasing the Kobo here in NZ so I've preordered it.

That... is disturbing.
Just a few weeks ago, Kobo was the cheapest Eink reader.

Just wondering if you received the e reader you purchased off the website and is it worth the buy? Just wondering as I am wanting to purchase one for my partner for Christmas. It looks as though we only have sony and kobo in NZ at the moment and I'm a bit undecided on whether or not to get one from the retail stores or get a better brand and buy online.

I'm in Wellington and my family has purchased 4 kindle 3's between us. They each take about a week to get here.

Ok, so I just saw that this thread was actually from a few years ago and realised NZ actually has a few more than just the kobo and sony products lol, so I'm now undecided on more than just these 2. Theres also a new one called a "cruz reader". I've checked out the kimble and that also sounds very good. But I'd like to hear what anyone might have to say about the cruz reader also. So many to choose from, its frustrating.

I got my Sony (and the Wifes one) from Ebay (USA) Even with expensive shipping it was still cheaper than buying locally (approx 2/3rds the price).

The Kindle is cheaper to get from the US too, cheaper than any other brand name reader available here, its a sad state of affairs, but I dont see why I should spend an extra $100nzd just because I live at the bottom of the world.

This 'cruz reader' seems to be an iPad competitor, and a little different from a regular eReader, where abouts have you seen them for sale in NZ? I wouldnt mind having a look myself, as Im on the lookout for a reasonably priced device to read colour magazines and comic books.
