I just want to read a book!!!!!
As an avid reader with hundreds of books (the real ones), I decided it was time I converted to the digital format. Mainly to reclaim much needed space taken up by my library. After researching the ereader spectrum, I settled on the Kobo Touch. It was (yes, past tense inferred, you'll see why later!!) simple enough as a reader and had wifi if I wanted a book on the fly..
All was going well for about two months. Then there was a request to update the firmware (V2.0.0 or something like that), thought OK, update!!! After the update I noticed a lot had changed. No big deal, just kept reading! After a few days I noticed that page turning response started to slow. It got worse! And worse and worse and worse.......... To the point that it became impossible to read! Tap, tap, tap, tap, TAP, TAP, TAP, TAP..... The page would not turn and in some cases it went back pages and went to menu's I didn't want to go to! You know how you get into a book and you just can't put it down? Well I was reading one of those books at the time I threw the Kobo Touch at a wall!! Left a nice indentation of the side of the Kobo Touch in the wall (must fix that this weekend, lol)... The funny thing though, it (the Kobo Touch into the wall) seemed to fix the page turning issue! Well, only for a couple of days. I happened to be reading at the kitchen table when it (the page turning issue) started up again. Bad place to be when you're into a book and the page won't turn... The Kobo Touch did not fare well against the edge of the table!! Prior to the violent end of my Kobo Touch, I did contact Kobo support via email. It was like the page turning issue, you waited and waited and waited.... I did not receive a response until I threatened them with internet (forum, facebook, twitter, etc, etc) and legal action. The response was typical of most support centres these days. Do this, reset this, etc, etc, etc..... I'm pretty tech savvy, was in the I.T industry for 25 odd years before I decided it was time for a change in 2004. Anyway, I'd tried all their suggestions way before I asked for their help and way before the death of my Kobo Touch... My last email to Kobo support has not (to this day) been replied to. I DO NOT want to reset, reconfigure, reconnect, sync, download, upload, update, email support, Google, tweet, facebook, text, etc, etc, et-al!!!!! I just want to read a book....................... That's what it's all about! |

If you are tech savvy why don't you take it back to previous firmware rather than abusing the KT, the wall and the table?

While I'll agree that the KT and the wall were abused, I don't think that the table qualifies. It seems to have stood up solidly.

You could put an anger management book on your KT, that could solve some problems...

Hehe, my wife is constantly amazed (and appalled) when I bang, hit or wack a device, electronic or mechanical, that isn't working right for me and after the wack actually starts working. She feels it's just not right that I can bang stuff around like I do and then have it work properly for me rather than just breaking.
![]() Of course for me it just depends on the replacement cost of the device. The more it costs to replace the thing, the less likely I am to try and solve it by banging it. Like my Kobo, I would never abuse a table or wall like that. Granted that yes the table did win in this case but abuse is still abuse. |

That's was a funny post. It reminded me tube TV we grew up with, they fixed themselves after a few hits on the sides.
Somewhere in my heart, I have a place for the smaller competitors. So, I still want a Kobo after (if) those issues resolved. |

Plus, the necessity of a Kobo Desktop Software (which required windows or mac neither of which I have) every time I had to factory reset the narsty thing, wasn't helpful to me at all. My husband has access to windows at the office so he is able to plug it in there when he needs to factory reset. (which is nearly as often as I did). I now have a rooted Sony T1 and a Kindle. I am hoping they get married someday, but I am happy enough that they hold hands and kiss sometimes. |

Aside from the anger management issues, it sounds like your Touch may have had a legitimate hardware problem.
And FYI, a light touch seems to register better on the KT than a firm press, but somethings tells me that you were jamming your finger as hard as you could at the screen which could also be the source of your troubles. Last edited by the.Mtn.Man; 08-15-2012 at 02:54 PM. |

Firmware 2.0 was a backward step in so many areas that I don't even trust the forward steps to work properly and don't use them. |

Funny thing throwing it and it started working again. lol. I have to say I think the real book will never die out, but the new digital age is here, as a new product comes out to the world we all want to try it out and this is just another phrase in our journey through life. But, the real book will never die out in the long run.

Personally, I think paper books will get to the same point as LPs. They will become a collectors item, or just used by "purists". Personally, the only reason I have opened a paper novel in the last nine months is to compare the text with that on the digital version. I have no desire to go back which is exactly my attitude when I started using CDs. And once my CDs were ripped to the computer... Last edited by davidfor; 08-17-2012 at 02:41 AM. Reason: Grammar |

Appreciate all the replies, thank you.
My post was out of frustration more than anything. How hard it is to create an electronic device that turns the pages of a digital book? Thats all I wanted.. And some space back from my library, LOL... Yes, I over reacted with regard to destroying my Kobo Touch and I could have re-installed the previous firmware. But why? Why should I have to waste more of MY time fixing an issue that clearly is not of my doing? Updates are meant to bring on something better, to solve existing issues. Not make a backward step! Why should I have to reset/reload/re-install/etc, etc, a device just because it's not doing what it's supposed to? I don't have to do it with my washing machine (think about how complex they are these days before commenting), my car, this PC I'm using. My point... Why should we have to spend OUR time looking for answers to problems clearly generated by the manufacturer, when we SHOULD be spending time using the device for its intended purpose? I paid for a product to fulfill a purpose I needed. I don't get paid to put up with it's faults. Again, I just want to read a book. That's what it's all about! |
