Calibre and Dropbox

After reading about the account of an Amazon user who got her kindle wiped it got me to thinking how those of us who use Dropbox and Calibre manage our ebooks. I know a lot of you here use both of these.

So is your Calibre Library based in Dropbox so you can access it from other computers and then you back up that Dropbox account to another media.

or

Do you store your Calibre Library on your computer and back that up to your Dropbox account.

I had my Calibre Library on Dropbox, but have recently purchased more space on SkyDrive and have switched over. Either is good, and of course you can purchase space above the free 2gigs from Dropbox...

I have my Calibre library in DropBox so I can access it both at work and home and on my phone and tablets. I backup frequently to a flash drive and external HD and less frequently to DVD. I also backup to SugarSync.

It turns out (what a surprise ) that she didn't get her Kindle wiped after all.

"I spoke with Linn and she told me Amazon did NOT wipe her Kindle; it was already broken. But she's lost about 60 books."
See this post in the thread in the news forum.

In answer to your query though, I use dropbox for my Calibre library, but also back it up on my PC & a flash drive. I have no fear of Amazon ever removing books from my Kindle (as it's happened only once with a single book despite all the scare stories), but I'm not about to rely on anyone other than myself to make sure I don't lose my books!

Yes I just now saw that in the other thread. Kinda changes things.

And I do the same as you. Library in Dropbox and backed up to flash and HD.

Highlighted to emphasize the importance of that.

Files in the Dropbox cloud are physically present on my computer, so I don't do anything extra since my computer backs itself up automatically to my Time Capsule.

I use Carbonite to back up all of my important files, include my calibre library. I also have a dedicated backup drive on my desk.

If it doesn't exist in three places, it doesn't exist.

I store it on my laptop. I also have dropbox on a desktop, and mobile dropbox on my tablet. Every month or so, I backup my Calibre Library. So I figure I have 4 copies--laptop, desktop, backup and dropbox. And, I convert all my azw books - just making sure. If Amazon were to ban me, I would have enough to keep me busy.

How do you do the conversions? I use a mac and would love to do this too. However when I did manage to find the odd book I had downloaded to the mac, it was titled in a format that made it impossible to even know what it was...

[edit] Actually, never mind, I decided to see what calibre would do and it does the job nicely.

I have mine on my hard drive, on Google drive, backed up to dropbox and to an external hard drive. I'm an electrical engineer and don't trust those pesky electrons.

I also ran out of physical space for paper books (I do still buy them, but then I pass them on). My real library is now in ebooks and I plan to keep them for the rest of my life so I have to take care of them.

I rysc my library to an external USB drive on the same PC, and also to a NAS. Every once in a while I back up to my keyring flash drive.

I have my library on my desktop, it's backed up automatically. I also keep a copy on a couple different flash drives. I only use DropBox for moving specific books to my iPad.

Calibre and Dropbox is yay for me.
Religiously move everything to Calibre after purchase and use both DropBox and SugarSync for storage.

I have certain libraries I use with SugarSync and some for DropBox so that I don't have to purchase space. I could do this forever.

The ironic side of this is: when you store something in the DropBox cloud you store it actually on an Amazon server.
