Like most technology products, each new version of Amazon’s Kindle eInk reader is lower-priced than the last one. There’s been speculation that the price will eventually go to zero, perhaps taking a page out of the cell phone model where the consumer commits to a long-term plan. There’s no monthly service plan for a Kindle so I always figured Amazon would require consumers to purchase a minimum number of ebooks over a 1- or 2-year period instead.

That makes sense, but there’s a bigger play Amazon probably has in mind and I’ll bet it will eventually feature their tablet, the Kindle Fire.

Think for a moment about the new and likely upcoming competition the Fire is encountering. First there’s Google’s Nexus 7. I’ve heard the Nexus 7 described as “the tablet the Kindle Fire should have been.” If that’s not bad enough, there’s also the iPad mini Apple is supposedly working on.

What if the smaller iPad matches the $199 price of the Nexus and Fire? Will Amazon go to $149? 99? How about free?

I don't know about free, but I could see them going for REALLY cheap; somewhere in the $40~ range with Prime.

And, I really doubt that Apple would price their NEW thing that low.

Well, if they added up the "credits" for the years I have had Prime, I should get one free. I think I would take it even without much memory or a SD slot.

If I got enough of them, I could support my bed if the post broke, or use them for wheel chocks out on the tarmac.

A $99 FIRE is easily doable.
Giving it free with a 3-year Prime subscription? Possible and sensible.

But it won't be anywhere near the hardware level of a Nexus or the baby unicorn.

Thing is, given the *other* ways Amazon pumps value into the Prime subscription it is unlikely they need to give even barebones FIREs away. Same day delivery will suffice.

In the past, Amazon has given $100 discounts on devices with 1-year Audible subscriptions.

Currently, you can get a free Kindle 4 SO by using two promos.

So, it's quite doable for Amazon to offer free devices with subscriptions to either Audible or Prime.

The "zomg free ereader" idea has floated around for awhile. It hasn't happened yet.
