Interesting. But Apple has never been concerned about the price of their products.

I don't know about free, but I could see them going for REALLY cheap; somewhere in the $40~ range with Prime. And, I really doubt that Apple would price their NEW thing that low. |

If I got enough of them, I could support my bed if the post broke, or use them for wheel chocks out on the tarmac. | |

A $99 FIRE is easily doable. Giving it free with a 3-year Prime subscription? Possible and sensible. But it won't be anywhere near the hardware level of a Nexus or the baby unicorn. Thing is, given the *other* ways Amazon pumps value into the Prime subscription it is unlikely they need to give even barebones FIREs away. Same day delivery will suffice. Kind of makes it less noteworthy with how often it's been brought up. Oldest I found from a quick search was Feb 2010: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=125513 https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=123312 https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=124173 https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=123651 https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=73578 |

The "zomg free ereader" idea has floated around for awhile. It hasn't happened yet. I think this is a "stopped clock is right twice a day" thing. |
