ebook viewer
Hello, almost every time I try to view a book in ebook viewer, I get an error and it closes with an error. This happens with both epub and mobi books.
I have time to start reading again, so i went to update calibre and I noticed a change with ebook viewer than what it used to be. I went ahead and uninstalled Calibre, made sure folder was deleted in program files too and installed Calibre again with the latest version. And I still have trouble viewing ebooks. Is there some kind component I'm missing to view these files in the ebook viewers new style? Something else I need to download? I can't figure it out. So I appreciate any help somebody could provide ![]() |

They are definitely not DRM books. These are books that are already in my calibre library and were working before.
Also I tested some more books this morning. And it is definitely the mobi files that are giving me errors and won't open. All of them. The Error I get is, a white pop up box comes up saying. Calibre-parallel.exe has stopped working. Than it goes, check online for a solution or Close the program. |

Open a command prompt, run
calibre-debug -w Then click the open button and pick a mobi file. POst any output you see in the command prompt. |

Doesn't show any errors, which means the crash isn't happening in calibre code. You've got something on your system causing the viewer to crash. The usual suspects are antivirus programs.

ok, thanks for reply. I did go and disable my antivirus. And gave calibre full rights. But nothing seems to work. Guess i can't use the mobi format.

What happens if you try a Mobi to ePub conversion?

@Sleepseeker - This is a long shot
A couple of months ago I saw a similar problem on a friends machine, "Excel has stopped working" and Windows went off to fail to find a solution. I did some searching and found an obscure reference that indicated it could be caused by dodgy codecs. So I uninstalled the video & audio codecs she had and some RAW codecs for her image viewer and refreshed excel - voila no sign of the problem. I downloaded the current versions of the codecs from K-Lite and FastPictureViewer, still no problems and none since. I think it was the K-Lite codecs, the version she had installed were quite old. It could be that a Windows update and old codecs didn't play well together. BR |

check what program is setup to handle .mobi in file associations & also in calibre preferences. what happens when you toggle calibre to use / not to use its own viewer for .mobi ?

I did some of those already. I did go and convert the mobi to epub and the epub works great, no errors are all. I did go and update my kodecs, that didn't help either.
It's okay, I use epub files 98% of the time, so I can still read. Thanks for all the suggestions, I guess this will just be a mystery to me. |

well there's a puzzle hweere, when you read a mobi file in calibre viewer, the 1st thing the viewer does is convert to epub (behind the scenes) ... then it displays the epub for reading.
you've tested both those steps individually. you should test turning off the use internal view for mobi option in preferences & see what happens then. I suspect you have installed something else recently which does not play nice with calibre. |

@Cybmole; I wonder what settings the reader uses when doing the conversion from mobi?

The reader doesn't do a full conversion. That would be too slow. What happens is that only the input plugin is run for the format being viewed.

another long shot, but maybe if you went back a few versions of calibre - to a time when everything worked... then trial & error to see what update broke things for you
