Delete books from library and not from the folder

I would like to remove several books from Calibre, but without deleting them from the folder. The way it is now, I have to use Explorer to remove the files from the Calibre-folder before I remove them from the library. In similar music organization programs, for instance Windows Media Player I can chose whether I want to delete only from the library, or from both the library and the disk. I would like to have that option in Calibre as well. It may be there, but I have not found it.

The folder IS Calibre. The folders belong to Calibre and are not yous to mess with.

Pray tell WHY you need to do this? Filters can hide from the visible list, by any criteria in the data that can be expressed.

If you want to preserve your book outside of calibre before deleting from the library then simply use calibre's "Save to Disc" function before you delete.

As theducks has pointed out, the folder structure is your library so you can't delete a book in the interface without deleting it from the folder. You are in effect saying, "I want to delete a book without deleting the book".

Have a read of the following thread to find out more about calibre's file structure:

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=119175

and you'll see that it does not work like Windows Media Player.

You have the option - deleting the book removes both files and metadata, using 'remove files of a specific format' deletes only files and leaves empty book (no formats, just metadata) in the library. If you go spelunking in the folders without using Calibre, then you may break your library. Calibre can't keep current data about your library if it's not informed of the changes.

Thank you all for the answers.

> Pray tell WHY you need to do this?

Because I mainly use Calibre to convert files to epub-format, and when that job is done I only need to preserve the epub-file so I can copy it to the device I use. I don’t want to use Calibre to organize a couple of thousands books.

> The folder IS Calibre. The folders belong to Calibre and are not yous to mess with.

Weeelll, I like to mess with the files and folders on MY hard-disk. And as I mentioned, music management programs gives you the option of not deleting the files just because you remove them from the library.

Thank you Agama; that actually solved the problem.

If you are only going to use Calibre for conversion purposes then why not use the Calibre Command line tools? That way you never copy files into the Calibre library and are in complete control of how the files are to be named and placed.

Yes, of course.

> why not use the Calibre Command line tools?

Thank you, itimpi - why didn't I think of that.
Simple, fast and efficient.
