No more Safari for Windows based PCs
"Windows users who are big Safari fans may be disappointed with the recent development made by the browser’s developer Apple, as the latter has decided to pull Safari for Windows out, just in time for the release of Apple’s Safari 6.
However, Windows users can still download Safari version 5.1.7 after tediously scouring for the download link in Apple’s support pages. The Safari version that can be downloaded by Windows users is the same with the Web browser that came with OS X 10.7.4 a couple of months ago. People speculate that Apple’s reason for pulling the plug for the Safari for Windows is that Apple is no longer interested in giving Windows a port for its OS X browser. Safari currently lags behind Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome with a 4.7% share of the browser market. According to Forbes writer Adrian Kinsely-Hughes, “While I find Safari to be an adequate browser for the Mac OS X platform, when it comes to Windows I’d put it behind Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera and even Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. In fact, the only time I even fire it up on Windows is when I’m testing something.” Would it be a big loss for Microsoft users?" http://technewsgadget.net/2012/07/no...ows-based-pcs/ ![]() |

Far more probable reason: Safari for Windows has a low market share. One site I looked at suggested that it was well below 1%. Another website noted that 5% of Safari users were on Windows (which would put the market share on Windows well under 1% again). Devoting resources to this market would be foolish.

I use Chrome on both PC and Mac. Only time I use it is on the iPhone. If I didn't have that they could pull it from OS X and I wouldn't notice for a month or two.

I tried it, it wasn't BAD. . .
A couple of versions ago, it was OK. But to tell the truth, I didn't feel it offered me any reasons to switch. It was a 'me too' sort of browser IMO.
I've been growing somewhat dissatisfied with Firefox of late. It seems slow and, at times, unstable. So I've been playing around with IE and Chrome. I had totally forgotten about Safari. I've got to say IE and Chrome seem VERY good. I think I'll probably switch away from FF, not sure which I'll use though. I personally lean towards Chrome, as I am starting to do a lot with my Droid phone, and all the Google integration seems smoother with Chrome, but some banking sites just don't seem to like anything but Internet Explorer. I may wind up Bi-Browseral. |

![]() I tried it shortly after it was released for Windows. I wasn't impressed, especially when compared to Chrome at that time. These days my browser of choice is Chrome. |

The numbers I saw were in the .5% range. That doesn't sound like much, but assume 100 million web users (on Windows) worldwide and you get 500 thousand users. Not much by Apple's standards, and not enough to justify their support, but still lustworthy if you're a smaller firm.

Downloaded this on my pc a few months ago, didn't like it all that much. Prefer Opera, then Firefox, although use sea-monkey as well. try to avoid IE where possible.

I love Safari on my Mac, but I didn't love the Windows version nearly as much.
I think the Windows version only exists because it shares a lot of code with iTunes. |

It just may be. . .
Gasp! Windows and Mac users really are different in how they view the world and what they expect from their computers. I think to a certain extent, Apple has always assumed that PC users have always secretly wanted a Mac, so anything that emulates that experience will be successful.
But PC users have consistently avoided the Mac experience regardless of how many times it is offered and emulated. I think this result was inevitable (once Jobs died, probably wouldn't happen if he were alive). That also may be why the new Windows 8 is viewed so skeptically by the PC user community. It may be very useful, but it ain't Windows as defined by the user community. |
