image spilling over pages
I have used Sigil to make my ebook from a file generated from InDesign. Everything works fine but lulu will not accept it as it list several errors. I can easily remedy this by running it through Calibre conversion but it makes duplicate covers.
My book is no text just a series of images with the text embedded in the picture (these are picture books). If I tick 'remove first page' it makes one cover but the second page has some sort of space placed in front of it meaning that the bottom of that image spills over to the top of the next page (effectively adding in an extra page to the book). It all lines up properly from the third page (inc. cover) onwards. I should add that this problem is evident on a macbook and an iPad. Any idea what I need to fix this or how to edit? |

Here is a picture of the problem.
There seems to be a gap added above the left page (after the cover) pushing an image down and onto a second page. This only happens once I generate a TOC from Sigil and convert in calibre. There must be a simple way of removing that extra space, surely. |

Why don't you tackle the problem head on by fixing the errors in Sigil, rather than via a convert with calibre.
I can move this thread to the Sigil forum if you wish You'll probably need to say what the errors are and where they are being reported - flightcrew, epubcheck etc BR |

Thanks for the reply. I have been using Calibre as it addresses all the problems in one fell swoop but it does create this extra problem.
I am trying to publish via lulu.com and, although the file passes the check in Sigil, these are the errors being reported via lulu's check: ERROR: Unable to locate a valid publication date. A date with the event attribute publication (opf:event=publication) is required in OEBPS/content.opf ERROR: Unable to locate a valid creator. A creator with the author role (role=aut) and the file-as attribute is required in OEBPS/content.opf ERROR: IOException: Unresolved external XML entity: 'http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd' in OEBPS/Text/DSD2.xhtml ERROR: Unable to locate element with id 'sigil_toc_id_1' in OEBPS/toc.ncx ERROR: Unable to locate element with id 'sigil_toc_id_2' in OEBPS/toc.ncx ERROR: Unable to locate element with id 'sigil_toc_id_3' in OEBPS/toc.ncx ERROR: Unable to locate element with id 'sigil_toc_id_4' in OEBPS/toc.ncx ERROR: Unable to locate element with id 'sigil_toc_id_5' in OEBPS/toc.ncx ERROR: Unable to locate element with id 'sigil_toc_id_6' in OEBPS/toc.ncx ERROR: Unable to locate element with id 'sigil_toc_id_7' in OEBPS/toc.ncx ERROR: Unable to locate element with id 'sigil_toc_id_8' in OEBPS/toc.ncx |

The strange thing is, if I let Calibre make a duplicate cover, I don't get this 'spilling over' but I don't really want two covers. I am getting around the duplicate cover by choosing the 'remove first page' option as I already defined the cover image in Sigil.
To clarify, these are kids picture books and each and every page is a jpeg with the text as part of the image. |

If you want to use calibre at end of your process, would it not be better to use calibre editor and ToC creation tools rather than Sigils - that's not a criticism of Sigil but... cooks, broth and al that.
The calibre ebook editor is very similar to Sigil, so the learning curve is not too difficult. You'd then have one port of call for help in creating a lulu/apple compliant product. Added : IMO converting is something best avoided unless you need to produce a 'not easy to create/edit' format BR Last edited by BetterRed; 11-24-2015 at 02:44 PM. |

Thanks, I am happy with the format from Sigil and the file works fine on my iPad and Macbook (ibooks) so i just need to address those errors really. Bit of a novice with code really...just good at making pretty pictures :-)

You modified/deleted the anchor points/targets that Sigil had generated.
regenerate the (HTML) TOC (Sigil uses the NCX data for the model) |

I have no idea what that means, i simply use Calibre to convert the books after usin sigil and it corrects all the errors that Lulu finds. Only problem is the extra cover which, if I remove through Calibre options, adds that extra space in.
