PRS 505 in the UK?

Hello:

I am seriously thinking about getting the 505 but I live in th UK.
I do have a friend in the US who could probably buy it, then forward it on for me, where would this leave me regarding import duties and VAT when it reaches home?

Can anyone confirm however that I cannot collect my free $100 of free books from connect store without a US credit card (which I don't have), so I will probably therefore lose out on the deal?

does anyone here know of an online shop that will deliver direct to the uk? To save my friend the hassle and make price comparisons?
Thanks

You have a legal obligation to pay VAT and import duty. Not to do so is tax evasion. If a package is sent to you by a courier service, they pay all the duties for you and send you a bill. If it gets sent through the normal post, the post office may or may not charge you the duties, but you must still pay it even if they don't. Not doing so is a criminal offence.

No, I cannot confirm that. You can certainly get your free books regardless of where you live - simply check the "I live in the USA" box when you register the Reader. No credit card required for that.

No internationally-shipping shop appears to have them in stock at present. That should change in the next few weeks.

Hi,
I bought my PRS500 about 6 months ago brand new and boxed from a seller on ebay. I had to pay about £30 import duty when I picked up the parcel. The seller made a customs declaration of "gift", and as I understand it it's just a matter of luck whether the UK customs decide to pick up on it or not. I have never ordered anything from the US without having to also pay UK duty though.
Also I was not able to collect the free offer of books because I do not have a US credit card. However, if you want to buy books from Connect and have a friend in the US who is willing to purchase credit gift vouchers for you, you can buy books using the gift code.

To repeat, you do NOT have to have a US credit card in order to get the free books. Simply check the "I live in the USA" box when you register the Reader, and the $100 will be credited to your Connect account.

yep, I bought my reader online from that photo & video shop in New York, took a week or so to arrive, paid the duty, ticked the box that said I live in the UK, didn't register a credit card and spent my $50 worth of vouchers.

I'm not sure which part you're asking about, ricdiogo, so I'll answer both as best I can.

None of the places that we know ship internationally have them listed in stock.

The 505 just launched at the beginning of October, so it's not unreasonable to assume that Sony plans to supply them to their resale partners in short order.

As best guesses go, they're pretty good ones.

Icarusbop,
My wife bought the Reader while on holiday in Florida, and got the $199 voucher which she downloaded before coming home. There is another $50 voucher available at the moment, which you may know about.
I am finding it difficult to source books from the UK, and am trying to locate possible suppliers.
If you or any other owners in the UK know where we might purchase books, I would be most obliged to you if you could let us know.

Thanks

Hi desgarland

There are some books in the Sony format prf avaiable from Fictionwise, they are mostly the cheaper trashier kind of novels (i've probably offended someone now, oh well) but good value and quite enjoyable. They list them as multiformat and the give you the choice of dowloading as prf or mobi, etc. Other than that the only choice appears to be all the free classics (yawn) or get someone to purchase credit for you on the Sony Connect site. Leaping Gnome has kindly done that for a number of people on this site.

Cheers

John

It's also possible to convert MS Reader (.lit) format ebooks too.

Yep!

Kovids Uber tool, Libprs500, will convert LIT to LRF.

If you buy DRM'd LIT you can rip off the DRM using ConvertLIT and convert using Libprs500.

Done it several times and no complaints.

The other benefit of buying LIT books is that should you change your reading device in the future - eg to one which supports MobiPocket - you'll very easily be able to re-format your books for that new device. I don't personally have any great faith in Sony's long-term committment to the e-Book business.
