Kobo Touch demoed at Bunkyo-do bookstore

Liz Castro is in Japan for the 16th Ebook Expo, and she has a short post with pictures about seeing the Japanese Kobo Touch. From First look at EPUB3-supporting Kobo Touch ereader in Japan (bold in original):

excellent support for vertical Japanese text.

Rakuten/Kobo, for example, announced that all of its Japanese ebooks will be in EPUB 3 format.

One of the pics featured on the blog shows the display featuring manga.

Does anyone know how manga books are supported on KT w/ NetFront?

Manga pages usually feature a fixed layout of frames. To be true to the original, I would imagine the entire page layout would need to be adhered to. This would result in the same issues that we have with PDF documents. Larger page layouts would not be readable w/o panning and zooming.

OTOH, the main idea behind EPUB is that the elements may be reflowed to fit the display. If the frames are deconstructed to make them flowable, the layout would be destroyed and frame overflows would be truncated.

Have you seen many native Japanese manga books? They're pretty tiny---I honestly doubt the screen size will affect a thing.
