Am reading Empire Falls by Richard Russo. Great book for hiding away in a small town -- Empire Falls -- full of quirky people (my favorite) and escaping your own small town full of quirky people. Good read!

I've bought all of Russo's works. He's a great literary writer.

When I lived in South Carolina I listened to this being read for 30 minutes every morning on public radio. Great book.

May I suggest another of his books which I enjoyed? Bridge of Sighs. Excellent!

I also recommend Russo's Straight Man- very funny novel.

Maybe its because choosing to stay in your home town, a choice few major book reviewers make, is implicitly praised. Maybe because the guy who goes in the booth for every election, but never actually votes, comes off as more loveable than Mrs. People Don't Change, his Bush-hating wife. Or it could be that I don't know squat, and the Pulitzer Prize winning Empire Falls really was better. |

I find Richard Russo and Charles Baxter to be a bit similar in the small-town theme. Anybody else see this? I personally prefer Charles Baxter.

Great comments all. I will try Bridge of Sighs. I just finished Empire Falls, and for some reason I was dissappointed in the school violence part of the ending. This was for a silly reason. I really liked the character of th boy who was hung in the closet...so I wanted him to turn out to be okay, or not so bad. But, again, a great book that took me away for quite awhile. I just started Sacred Games by Vikram Chandra hoping it will also take me away...
