Question how long to upload ebook to device

I am quite new to the ebook world. I have a Sony PRS T1 and am using Calibre to organise and transfer my books. Can anyone give me an idea how long it takes to upload a book from Calibre to my device. It seems to take for ever, often over night. Is there any means by which I can be sure transfer is underway and how much of the upload has taken place already.
I do have very slow Broadband, less than 1 megabite, will this have the effect of slowing transfer?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Unless calibre is having to convert the book to a different format, the transfers should be quick; on the order of seconds, not hours.

Are you side loading (USB cable) your T1 ? That should take less than a minute. A bit longer if you don't have the proper format.
Something is really broken if it takes much longer to transfer the correct format. Do turn off the Antivirus scan of your 'sony T1 drive', that could be hammering the connection while the a/v access every file it can see on the T1

Depends. CPU speed can affect transfer speed (particularly the sending metadata and collections portion). If using an old PC, it's possible that the OP may have USB 1.1 which can further reduce transfer speeds. The number of books being transferred plays a big part. Had to leave my ebook reader connected to the PC overnight when I transferred 3,000+ books from my crappy nettop.

Thank you all for information and suggestions. I will turn of my AVG anti virus temporarily and try transfer then. I am only attempting to transfer one book at a time so far.

@flipsat - not directly a solution to your problem but you might also want to consider using the Reading List plugin. What I and others do is instead of using send to device is just add books to a reading list associated with that device instead. Then when the device is next plugged in the books on the list will sync to that device. Or even while you have it connected you can queue them up and do a manual "sync" - it is less work for the calibre UI to not keep refreshing itself after you send each individual book when doing ad hoc sending.

You did not answer the USB version level question suggested by ilovejedd?
Without knowing how ancient your PC is, you just might have a USB 1 port (USB 3 is the brand newest )

My old blue PEz would only work correctly with USB 1.1.
Even then, sending A normal 600K book only took a minute. The Calibre , On Device status, synch could take 5 minutes.
BTW I use AVG and have excluded the PEz (I made its drive letters assignments (I use mid alphabet letters) permanent by using a setting in Disk Management)

I'm on an old ( 5 years + ) PC with XP3 and T1, and some books take longer than others, but 4/5 mins is the max.
80% are 30-60 secs.

My PC is a Dell Dimension C521 Windows XP 5 years old and the USBs are as follows:USB
two front-panel and four back-panel USB 2.0–compliant connectors. Sounds like these should not reduce speed of transfer??
As regards AVG, I have looked in Disk Management in Computer Management but can't see anything that looks like an option to exclude the PEz. Guess I am not in the correct programme.

The PEz (2 drive letters) is MY reader
To be able to exclude (permanently, your device needs to:
1) get the same drive letter(s)
2) Not ever assign those letters with another (infectable) storage device.
Accepting the (next) drive letter normally assigned to devices AND disabling the scan of files copied from that device, is a recipe for trouble.

a simple test would prove/disprove avg as cause, just temp disable AVG completely & re-check book loading speed, re-enable after the test.

another simple test would isolate calibre's contribution to any delay: try loading the same problematic book(s) but this time don't use calibre, do copy / paste from calibre library location to sony drive, in windows, & time that process. i.e. same hardware path, different software in charge.
