Would a Kobo Vox be good for this?
Hi friends,
My old laptop has finally had it (Ubuntu couldn't save it) and I'm your typical poor student. I have a Kobo Touch and I love it. Basically my requirements are that I want something to write with using Swiftkeyx. I have small hands and would love a Galaxy Note, but it's too big for me to use as a phone. I have a Nexus One Android phone, but the screen is too small to comfortably write with. What a dilemma! Would a Vox be too underpowered for this? I only know how slow it is to type on the Touch. I live in Canada btw. Last edited by calzephyr; 06-08-2012 at 09:06 PM. Reason: Forgot detail |

I use SwiftKey x on both my Vox and my Galaxy Tab, and it is definitely easier to type on the 7" Vox than the 10" Tab. The Vox is slower though...
I would suggest a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 (16 gb) which is $100 off right now at Future Shop and Best Buy at $249.99 until June 21st. It has a lot of extras the Vox doesn't have such as front & rear cameras, Bluetooth, Play Store access for apps, microphone, GPS and it also like the Vox allows you to expand your memory with a micro-sd card up to 32 gb. The processor is 1.2 Ghz instead of only 800 mhz. For a bit more, I think you'd have a writing tool + much more in extra features so you wouldn't feel the need to upgrade too soon. Of course, once the Galaxy Tab is back at full price, then it's another story and the Vox price-wise is good value for the money. It's at $169.99 right now at Best Buy. But only for this weekend... A tablet isn't a substitute for a laptop. As a student, surely you need a proper laptop, not a tablet, don't you?

Hi Harry,
I'm a mature student and I do have a desktop. I just need something portable and SwiftKey has made all the difference. We have a ASUS PC EEE running Windows kicking around, but the keyboard is too small and it doesn't work so well on laps! So something small (but not too small) that I can hold would be just perfect. |

Hi Cdesja5,
Thanks! I was looking at the Lenovo Ideapad as well last night. My concern with that one is that it is running an older version of Android than the Tab. I don't know if it's possible to ever be ahead of the curve on technology. Between my husband and I, we have buried plenty of gadgets in the tech graveyard over the years! Oooh...$169...versus the Tab...thanks for the tip! I'll have to think on it more. Isn't SwiftKey X the best? I don't know what I would do without it now! |

The Tab is definitely the better buy, a much quicker tablet with a LOT of extra features. It runs Honeycomb and Samsung has confirmed they will be rolling out Ice Cream Sandwich to the Tabs shortly, they just haven't given the dates yet.
PS: I figured you might have a PC and just wanted something portable to take notes in class. I imagine you could also record (with a Tab, not the Vox) if you were close enough to the lecturer. And yes, Swiftkey is great! Specially for smaller hands. |

I use a Windows laptop with an 11.6" screen for a portable device. Easily carried - it's about the size of an A4 sheet of paper - and the keyboard is big enough to type on properly, which I can't do with an netbook, and, of course, it'll run all the same apps as a larger PC. For me, it's the perfect compromise between size and portability.

Hi again Cdesja5, well, I was totally sold :-) We went to Future Shop last night and picked up a 7" Tab. Loving it already. It's just right for me.
I actually write my notes the old fashioned way - paper! It used to be back in the day everyone ducked out at break time for a smoke or a coffee, now they all run to find an electrical outlet! Despite being a mature student, I'm still a poor student. I don't qualify for this or that because I'm too old, married and have a house. Ah well. I think the Tab will indeed be better in the long run. Thanks again! Harry, thanks for the laptop suggestion. The one that died was a 17" laptop. What a workhorse it was! But I would just really like something small that I can put in my purse or my bag :-) I looked at Memory Express and I just can't shell out the extra $$ for a laptop. |

Aw! Sometimes it's so hard to win at these things, no matter how hard you research or wait for sales. There's always going to be a kicker. I guess the sage advice is to go with the platform that works with your phone. My brother bought a Playbook and it syncs with his Blackberry. It was a pleasant surprise to discover that the apps I use on my Android phone could be used with the Tab.
I used to use Aldiko before I bought a Kobo. I had bought the premium version when it came out and sadly my phone is so "ancient" that it always crashed. The developers couldn't help me...works like a charm on the Tab! |
