several free books from Backlist eBooks authors
I got this e-mail yesterday from Patricia (P.B.) Ryan's mailing list - she is very active in the Backlist eBooks group of authors, and I recognize several (all?) of the authors from that group.
Quote:
Stock up on your summer reading!
This summer, I've decided to offer book #1 of my bestselling mystery series as a free download. When I found out that some of my best author pals are doing the same, I thought you might like to check out their free books, too. After all, the summer has just started. If you're anything like me, you'll want to make sure that e-reader is well-stocked.
Oh, and you might want to snag these great page-turners right away, because they're free for a limited time only!

Several are repeat freebies, and some have even had their own threads before, but here is the link to the website (hopefully affiliate link-free since it came straight from the e-mail):

And here are the books (the website has the links to all the various stores for each book, and I have to run out to an appointment and don't have time to copy them all over):

Can Lucy catch a killer or is this the last confrontation for her—period?

The Heart of Dog anthology by Doranna Durgin and others (already recently mentioned in another thread here...)
Quote:
The Heart of Dog anthology includes Doranna Durgin's various backlist dog stories, and that's all it was initially meant to include—until her dog-loving writer friends heard about her need to fund expensive veterinary treatment for her beloved young companion and dog sports partner, ConneryBeagle. In short order, the book filled out with nine more stories, all from wonderful authors.
The stories encompass a range of genres and moods—plenty of humor, plenty of sweetness and satisfaction, and above all, a profound understanding of the Heart of Dog.
Author Friends of Connery: Jeffrey Carver, Julie Czerneda, Tanya Huff, John Mierau, Fiona Patton, Jennifer Roberson, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, & John Zakour (x2!); graphic artist Pat Ryan, and production assistant Tom Powers. Connery himself has been on social networking since the day he left the litter, and is on Twitter, LiveJournal, and FaceBook as “ConneryBeagle.”

Almost a Bride by Patricia McLinn
Quote:
Dave Currick was everything Matty Brennan wanted for as along as she could remember. Right up until he broke her heart six years ago. Now that she’s returned to Wyoming for good, what she wants more than anything is to save her family’s ranch. Even if that means swallowing her pride and asking Dave to marry her.
Matty’s up to something—Dave knows that much. Just as he knows that Matty needs help, so of course he’ll provide it, just as he has all her life. Doing what’s best for Matty is second nature. Even when it comes to marrying her in name only. Although he can’t resist one hot-blooded kiss after the I-dos.
Maybe—just maybe—his Matty will become more to him than Almost a Bride.

Almost Perfect by Julie Ortolon
Quote:
Almost Perfect (which was a Rita finalist and won a Reader's Choice Award from Affaire de Coeur magazine) is Book One of the Perfect trilogy
Maddy, Christine, and Amy are thrilled over the success of their friend's best-selling self-help book, How to Have a Perfect Life, until they discover the friend used them as negative examples of how woman let fear screw up their lives. Together they make a pact: they each have one year to overcome the fear holding them back and prove Ms. Perfect wrong.
Maddy, the artistic gypsy of the group, must face her fear of rejection to get her artwork in a gallery. A job as arts director at a summer camp near Santa Fe seems like a start in the right direction.

In Too Deep by Kathryn Shay
Quote:
In Too Deep is the first novella in Shay’s powerful new anthology, America's Bravest. (All six novellas are available in a boxed set.)
In the Hidden Cove Fire Department, Gabe Malvaso is a favorite among firefighters. He’s tough, fair, has a good sense of humor and loves his work. But for eighteen months, he’s avoided a member of his crew, Firefighter Rachel Wellington, despite his knife-sharp attraction to her. She is also drawn to him but is equally determined to keep things professional between them--until they’re trapped in a basement for a day, thinking they’ll never be rescued. Then, their feelings for each other explode like the building around them.

Shades of Honor by Wendy Lindstrom
Quote:
Prepare to fall in love with the Grayson Brothers in award-winning Shades of Honor. Haunted by a gruesome war and his own dark secrets, Former Union Soldier Radford Grayson returns home, seeking a loving reunion with his brothers and a place where he and his young daughter can make a home. Desperate for peace, Radford is ambushed by his unexpected and forbidden love for Evelyn—his brother's fiancée.
There’s just one catch: The camp is run by Maddy’s high school flame, Joe, now an ex-Army Ranger, whose heart she broke—okay, smashed. His anger towards Maddy hasn’t cooled one bit. But neither has their attraction. Old desires burn hotter than ever as the two face the biggest fear of all: giving love a second chance.
