Alan Hunter - George Gently.

Another moan about pricing....

Having enjoyed the George Gently UK TV police shows a lot, my interest was alerted when recieving this months catalogue from a kind of book club I have used for years - The Book People, here in UK.
Excellent for physboks, especially the odd "star " ref work, I still buy from them occassionally when it's the only option.

This month they were offering all 10 George Gently (a cop) novels, a series began in 1955. - police procedural/slightly cosy/UK policing /crime.

The price for all 10 in paperback, £10-99.
Amazon price kindle edition - £4-79 each.

I mean, what is the point ?

[ They are also offering all 6 of the Orange Prize shortlist for a total of £20 in physbooks.
The difference here is not as great, but still beats the digital, just.]

Well, I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.... (but I'm apparently missing it....)
Seems like most of us here (me included) complain when an ebook is NOT priced cheaper than a physical book, and it seems like that's exactly the situation that you're detailing?
US prices run typically $7.89 in ebook, a little over $15 for A-stock paperback (at Amazon)-- similar ratio, with the UK 'premium' for actual printing being just a little higher than the 'premium' in the US, but the ebook price being slightly lower at today's conversion rate.

Actually, this isn't the correct forum. This ought to be moved to general discussion.

Edit: post deleted.

He means you can buy all 10 together for £10-99.
Ebooks are £4-79 each times 10 which equals £47-90.

£4.79 is not an unreasonable price for an eBook, in my view. The standard price for a paperback in the UK is £7.99. I should add that I've actually bought all 11 of the eBooks which are currently available.

ETA: You can also buy an eBook omnibus of the first four books in the series for £6.71, which is pretty good value, I think.

Yep, seems fair - looks like they are trying to shift a load of stock to make room.
The Book People don't even sell eBooks do they?
If they don't, then are you expecting every store to match the lowest price for ebooks for every single sale out there?
You may as well complain about the Dickens collection they are selling for the special price of £26 when you can get it for free as eBooks.

To be honest, if you expect to find what Martin Shaw portrays in the tv series you are in for a huge disappointment.

The televised series only vaguely resemble the books starting from the toal absence of Bacchus whom I really dislike.

Being an avid reader and one of the biggest collectors in Europe if not the world of Martin-related items I enjoy both, but better warn you.

Personally I prefer the books, but then that's true of almost all the TV series I can think of (with the possible exception of "Inspector Morse", but even there the "literary Morse" is rather different to the TV portrayal).

Aah... Well, that's entirely different....(Never mind!) (Thanks, Apache!)

If it was a series I was familiar with (and wanted, and was accessible to me), that would truly make the p-books a bargain, and I'd snap them up. The ebook pricing still seems at least reasonable (although higher than my threshold, considering my TBR list.) I certainly wouldn't expect every vendor of ebooks to match what has to be clearance-sale pricing on p-books, though.

I agree, Harry, but I think we'd all like ebook prices a bit lower, and it was the fortuitous arrival of the catalogue, and the offer at such a good price, which made me check digital prices.
I'd probably have bought them happily @ £4-79 if I hadn't seen the physbook prices !
I think I'll go for the omnibus, and see if I'm swayed sufficiently to stick to ebook for the rest ...

And thanks for the warning, cuppa, but I expected that , and it won't distress me - I always assume adaptations and originals to be different animals
