So then you didn't read the article. The main complaint seems to be trademark related. Other sites are presenting themselves as the pirate bay. Using the logo.

The argument is about plagiarism, something the pirate bay doesn't do. Not about the distribution. Which the pirate bay also doesn't do since they don't host infringing content only make finding it convenient.

Actually they're not worried about people ripping them off at all, which is consistent as they've already zipped up their entire site and distributed it as a zip file torrent. If anyone wants to get everything that was hosted on TPB all they have to do is download the zip, which is apparently less than 100 megabytes.

The noise they're making is about the copycat sites charging for downloads and mention of concerns about the security of anyone who divulges information to the copycat sites, such as Paypal account information. Although to be fair, anyone who pays for purported TPB downloads probably isn't too clued in anyway and could probably do with a wakeup call.

Yes, I did indeed read it. They are whining that other people are using their "intellectual property" (logo, etc). Are you saying that it's "worse" to use someone's logo than to engage in massive copyright infringement?

I wasn't saying that --but I will if you like. I consider fraud as worse than infringement.

But what i was saying is that they are not complaining about someone else doing what they did, they are complaining about being impersonated. They are complaining about use of a trademark. Trademark != Copyright.

Agree with them or not, they are not being hypocrites here. Note your own word, using. Not distributing, using. Not linking, using.

Pay to download sites have existed for years, if they were concerned about those they would have made a fuss about them long ago. TPB also made a big fuss when some clothing manufacturer registered their pirate ship/cassette logo as a trademark.

Which also is not related to copyright but trademarks.

Of course it is different. But since they so brazenly trample the rights of copyrights holders, it is not easy to feel any sympathy for TPB. This linking instead of storing the pirated materials onsite is such a sad excuse. They are actively supporting and enabling infringment of copyright. And they profit from it.

They're not worried about other sites using pay to download, nor are they worried about TPB proxies, just that pay to download proxies are using fake TPB proxies to charge. There's an article about it on Torrentfreak and a comment about it on the TPB blog which makes their attitude clear. I think the original article got hold of the wrong end of the stick and now it's being flailed around incorrectly.

Go back and look at what I complained about. I didn't say to give them sympathy. I took objection to Harry claiming it was "exactly what they are doing to others". It is not.

Then I was asked if I was saying one is wore than the other, I wasn't but just for the sake of clarity as I personally rank the severity of offenses, yes, not that the question or answer are really on topic here.

Having read the article on The Register, and The Pirate Bay's own blog post, I can't seem to find where TPB is complaining about having their intellectual property ripped off. All they seem to be doing is warning users about these proxies. Am I missing something? Here's the blog post from The Pirate Bay for those unwilling (or in the case of the UK, unable) to go there:

A lot of proxies in support of TPB are popping up, which is a good thing. But not all of these proxies are nice!

We've noticed at least 3 sites that are tricking users to buying access or similar. We do not condone this behaviour, The Pirate Bay is a free service!

If you've ended up on this page, we've re-hijacked you from the scam site (or you're a regular reader of our blog, but since we're writing boring stuff mostly, we think the first option applies). We'd want to encourage you to look for a reliable source on where to find a good proxy that works for you. The people at TorrentFreak usually have a good list of updated proxies. And if you can reach our original page, you should use that. It's always the safest thing to do.
