Why doesn't Amazon promote the Kindle DX?
Looking at the "Kindle Family" photo on the Amazon front page, it seems the DX is the child they keep chained in the basement. Are the keyboard models on the way out? Maybe there's a Fire-DX in the works?

They haven't updated the DX line in ages. Most likely it's just not a hot seller, and will eventually get phased out. I like mine, but I really get a lot more use out of my 6" Kindles.

Love my DX. Use my Kindle Keyboard much more because of size. DX never caught on. It's too bad we'll never see another update.

I think the text/reference book market never took off the way Amazon hoped it would. I love my DX for reading all my reference manuals, but I've decided I'd much rather use a 6" reader for books.

Kindle Fire has totally replaced the Kiindle DX. Once you start using Android Apps, there is no way back.

There is a huge educational market out there, but it seems to be slow to convert to digital. The DX was ahead of its time.

I had read that the DX was likely the end of the line when I bought it. But I bought it to do one thing and it does that one thing it brilliantly.
Now I'm curious about why would you prefer the smaller readers? It's obvious why anyone would like Fire, but do the other readers offer anything different than size and touch? Maybe the latest firmware offers better .MOBI functionality? |

Size and price. If you mostly read novels, a 6" eink reader is light and cheap (< $100) and the same size as a paperback.

Definitely size/weight. I read mostly at the gym (where the placeholders for the books on the machines are not very sturdy and the motion could shake off the DX), and while in bed, where the smaller size is just easier to hold.

My guess is that the advantages of the larger screen are most important when you're reading magazines and textbooks, and for those you really want color and maybe animation.
So tablets fulfill the function better, maybe. |

It isn't worth it for the textbooks either. I think they were hoping the prices would go down, but they're still so expensive that buying the DX to store them in wouldn't be saving any money. The rental service has pretty much bombed too because they're so high too:

At $259.- I consider the DX to be a pretty good deal. I came from the Irex DRG 800 and there was no way I would go back again to a 6" reader. It is just so much more comfortable and faster to have more text on the screen. It is not very portable, yes. Neither is 6", IMHO. When I am on the go I take the phone for a quick reading fix.
It would have been nice to have DX Touch, though. With full Android and a faster processor. But that is not in the cards, we will just have to wait for new screen technology for tablets before this dream comes true. |

When you hear of multiple returns/free replacements of the 6" Kindles because of eInk screen problems, which in reality are the users' fault because of inadvertant pressure applied to the screen, ya gotta think that the more fragile 9" DXes see even more returns.
Then there's the high cost of the screens and resultant high price, resulting in consumer complaints: "Where's the wi-fi? Where's the speed? Why so much for just a couple more inches?" |

I think the DX may be a bit of niche market; It's big, heavy,
and it cost more, But for reading full size PDFs is works great. I tried reading PDFs on my Kindle Kybs and on my Kindle Fire, and neither were quite as good as the DX (unless you like scrolling). When you have a 3000+ page pdf you will appreciate the DX. |

Everyone who has a problem posts here, but satisfied users tend not to post at all. I've had 8 or 10 different Kindles now, and not a defect in any of them. Speed issues with the DX, yes. |
