At 99 cents I downloaded 29 books. My budget for books this week was $30, this way I can get one more if there are some recommendations. I figure that of the 29 at least 10 will be good, 12 will be ok and the rest might be blahablaha. I'm stilahead of the curve.

They're almost all vintage pulp fiction from the 50s-70s, reprinted by F+W/Adams Media's Prologue Books imprint. There's a freebie to try which is one of their weekly offerings here.
They do put up a banner on the cover if a book's an award-winner, and you can google or check the author's name at Wikipedia (if applicable) to see if they've gotten acclaim in the past. For example, William Campbell Gault is an Edgar Award-winner and has a Wikipedia entry. And a couple of his things are public domain in the US, as well. So at least that would give you a starting point for which authors may be the more prominent/hopefully better quality ones to read the samples of first, and which of their books to spend money upon if in the States and can dip into their public domain. |

I'm going to get Trigger Mortis, not least for its title, and because it is one of the "Johnny Liddell, New York PI" series which in its day was very successful.
This was posted by Frank Kane's grand-daughter at Thrilling Detective: "TRIGGER MORTIS, by Frank Kane (251 pp.; Rinehart; $2.95), starts shooting up the seamier side of Manhattan long before anyone thinks of calling the cops. Johnny Liddell, one of the hardest private eyes in town, takes on ex-pugs, Harlem hopheads, dance-hall dolls, a poverty-row pressagent and the alcoholic editorial staff of a scandal magazine in a two-fisted attempt to keep a client from being reminded of her days as a dancer at stag smokers. It proves only that when a girl gets into trouble there is always a good man around to get her out, provided she has copper-colored hair and the kind of construction that puts a lovelight in a private eye." -- the complete review from the Apr. 28, 1958 issue of Time Magazine |

And perhaps another, Killing Cousins, a sample of Fletcher Flora's work.
"Willie is an alluring woman. She’s the kind of wife that other men lust for. But when she decides her husband, Willie, had ought to be murdered, the stunning beauty turns deadly. The killer? The man who agrees to help her carry out the devious plot? Larry’s cousin Quincy.Quincy plans how to get rid of the body—how to make it look like Larry had run off and left his wife behind. It’s a grand plan. But will it hold together?" What's not to like? Need more? This blog post offers a nice review and appreciation. BTW, Prologue Books are available at Kobo as well for $3.99 and subject to Kobo's periodic non-agency store-wide discounts. So if you miss something at 99¢ today, there are future bargains lurking. ![]() |

Fletcher Flora would be worth a look, certainly.
At 99c I think if you like the blurb on some - give them a shot. ![]() |

Like this one, sounds a bit like the James Ellroy story Gravy Train
Skulldoggery http://www.amazon.com/Skulldoggery-ebook/dp/B006UCSNO2 "Ten million dollars to be divided equitably among the departed Grandfather Hunter’s remaining family, with a proviso being, in proper legal terms, that the entire ten million dollars was to be held in trust for the exclusive use of Senorita Fogarty her lifetime, and for the lifetime of her pups (Senorita Fogarty being a Chihuahua of questionable breeding) and for the lifetime of her pup’s pups, etc., etc. Only upon the death of Senorita Fogarty and her pups (if any) would the inheritance go to the family. ‘Tis plain to see that the life of Senorita Fogarty wasn’t worth two cents, much less ten million dollars. But to the rescue! Our senorita is to be protected by the Crumps, Grandfather Hunter’s trusted servants. And did we forget to mention that the erstwhile heirs are a rather bungling, ineffectual lot? Will Senorita Fogarty outwit the scheming Hunter family? Will the Hunters regain the birthright that is undeniably theirs (all ten million dollars’ worth)? Will the Crumps . . . oh, forget it—just read the book!" |

Be sure to use the Look Inside samples. Some of these have slightly messed up formatting that you might need to fix for easier reading. (Unless you like having no paragraph indents or spaces.) |

Or how about a pulp version of :-
Lysistrata http://www.amazon.com/Lysistrata-ebook/dp/B006PI01ZK Lysistrata paced relentlessly in the garden, nervously plucking at leaves. It had been seven months since she had seen her husband, Lycon—since he had left her to go off to war. Seven months of lonely days and empty nights—of aching heart and throbbing loins. Seven months of longing. But now a strange smile played around her lips. Tonight he was coming home— |
