The Ring of Fire

I have picked up an electronic copy of book 2 in the series, I have read book one, which has brought a few questions to mind that forum members might be able to help answer: First, I have read that there are a few books about people and towns that have been displaced in time. Other than the Ring of Fire series other series that comes to mind about a town or people displaced in time is TV's Land of the Lost, Back to the Future and Star Trek does displaced in time regularly, can anyone think of another book about a town displaced in time? I have checked some of Eric Flint's facts with Wikipedia and it seems that some of his facts are slightly off, how historically correct are these books?

His Latin isn't very good - that's for sure. What facts did you have in mind as being wrong?

1250 BC my that's a jump. How about anything else about a town?

Wikipedia claims that Gustav Adolphus, died November 6, 1632, and this book has him alive the year after his death. How historically accurate are these books generally?

That's because the story results in history CHANGING. That's the whole point of them.

The books try to be historically accurate right up to the time that Granville appears in Germany in 1651.

Gustav Adolphus doesn't die on November 6th, 1632 in the books because the appearance of Granville is sufficient to change his actions.

Personally I found a bit more to put me off him than a few incorrect facts or phrases.

Sorry, but I thought great idea, terrible treatment.

Does anyone recall a town being displaced in time, other than the ring of fire books? I have have examples of people being displaced in time: TV's Land of the Lost, Starships - Star Trek, SM Stirling's Nantucket Series, I seem to recall there was a series of books about an army regiment being displaced in time.

Nantucket is a town and it was displaced in S. M. Stirling's books.

Are you thinking of The Lost Regiment by William R. Forstchen? It was displaced but not to the past. It was displaced to another planet.

Second and seperate question on a similar topic - I have heard it said that there is no specific reading order to the books. Do you concurr or do you recommend a specific reading order?

There is a specific reading order, although some are more specific than others.

I'm sure this has come up before, let me see...

Ah, here we go.

Short version:

Quote:
1632
Ring of Fire
1633
1634: The Baltic War

(Somewhere along the way, after you’ve finished 1632, read the stories and articles in the first three paper edition volumes of the Gazette.)

1634: The Ram Rebellion
1634: The Galileo Affair
1634: The Bavarian Crisis

(Somewhere along the way, read the stories and articles in the fourth paper edition volume of the Gazette.)

Ring of Fire II
1635: The Cannon Law
1635: The Dreeson Incident
1635: The Tangled Web

(Somewhere along the way, read the stories in Gazette V.)

1635: The Eastern Front
1636: The Saxon Uprising
And if you enjoy the anthologies, there's also now Gazette VI and also Gazettes 6-40. (The arabic numeral Gazettes are the electronic-only editions.)

Excellent, thanks. How does the forthocoming Kremlin Games figure into this list? I think that it fits on the end. Where does the name assiti shards come from as the name of the series? I would think that the series would be called the Ring of Fire.

Yes, Kremlin Games comes at the end. (At the moment!)

Well, when he first wrote it, Eric had the idea that there would be a whole series of books about different transposed people/places caused by the Assiti mucking about with time. But this particular one really took off, and I think only one other 'shard' has been written about: Time Spike which involves several groups being taken back over 65 million years...

I would think that the original story line of the Assiti would be still valid and could be brought in on the novels if the author os desired. In one of the books he could have some characters find some evidence that the ring of fire was due to the assiti and some evidence that the same thing happened before. In short I think he could work them in.

Having done a bit more research, it seems that there was/is going to be another branch where the Assiti (or investigating the same) do play a larger role. Sarah Hoyt was going to be co-author, but I haven't found out whether the project is still live.
