Actually, our books are DRM free, so even if bought at Amazon, they can be converted...and all our books are available in all formats except those in the Amazon KDP select program -which is how they are free on Amazon.

Tell anyone and everyone. I have to say though, it's disheartening that every time I mention that coupon here - I get a slew of people trying to steal a $2.99 book by creating accounts like "Bob Spambot from Alfalfa Oregon" (lol) urgh.

All of our books are available in all formats. We often have free promotions at our site ... and our books are DRM free, so if you got the Kindle version and opened it in CALIBRE you could convert it, but yeah...if someone wants one of our freebies in ePub I'm sure something could be arranged. Unfortunately, the only major distributor currently offering a way to offer "free promotion days" is Amazon, and to take advantage of that feature, the book has to be exclusive to Amazon.

Is there any reason not to offer the free eBook via your site? That way, it gets people to your site and it gets the eBook(s) available in every format you offer.

Answering for him, yes - in order to be in the KDP Select program (which gets you 5 free promotion days), you can't offer the book anywhere else, including your own publisher site.

JSWolf - Like koland said, this book is being used to promote a particular author's sales on Amazon, so it's part of their KDP select program. For 90 days it can't be available anywhere else. This is just one of many promotions we do. The quick answer, though, is that we can't offer it free on our site until it's out of the program.

When you use KDP select, you can bump a book up near the top of the best-seller lists on Amazon, where it gets visibility and hopefully generates sales of the author's other titles. We don't do this for most of our books - and if you were to use that coupon code above, you could get ALMOST any book on our site for free, so we ARE looking out for you.

I know about KDP select and how you have to keep it there for 90-days. But that doesn't do any good for the people who don't use Kindle format eBooks, don't convert Kindle format eBooks and basically need it to be in ePub from day 1.

When the 90-days is up, does the book go back to your store and stay there without going back to KDP select? There are lots of people who still might not buy it because of thinking it could be pulled at any time to go back to KDP select.

Even most Kindle only customers do format shifting (if only PDF->Kindle). It's not as though you don't have a copy of Calibre and can't download it from Amazon and read it on your reader (you just don't want to, because of an irrational worship of the EPUB format).

In any case - almost every place is waking up to the reality that they must continue to allow downloads from your library, even if a book is removed by the publisher. There's no reason to think that the publisher themselves won't do the same.

If you won't buy any book for fear it will end up in the KDP Select program (or the similarly restrictive, but less lucrative/desirable version over at B&N), then you will end up only purchasing from the Big 6 Agency publishers and any other large enough to force Amazon to deal with them direct, rather than thru the KDP side of their store.

But the problem comes in for people who do not format shit. And format shifting is not as easy as you seem to think. I've converted a lot of Mobipocket format eBooks and some have needed a good deal of work to clean them up so they look good. It's not always a case of just convert and read. It doesn't work that way. You want to have eBooks that looks good and if it doesn't, there can be a lot of work involved as the underlying code for a Mobipocket eBook can be atrocious. I'm not saying that all ePub are wonderful. But most ePub I've looked at (not from Smashwords) are either fairly easy to deal with or not too much of a mess.

Another question arises... what if we wait the 90-days for the eBooks we want to come out of KDP select and they don't? What then? That's the problem. We don't know what's going to happen after the 90-days. Basically, KDP select is taking a lot of eBooks away from readers.
