Help What are your favorite American classics?

Hello I have taught High school Science for so many years that my literature is rusty. Next year I will be teaching american literature to a group of homeschoolers with learning disabilities. Many of them have dyslexia and some others have low comprehension although they read out loud at reading level. I was thinking digital media might be the way to go for them in that the students could use text to speech and read/ listen at the same time.
I would like to cover the classics of American literature. poetry, short stories and some novels. Many of these kids because of their learning disabilities have huge gaps in their exposure to literature.I don't want to waste any time because there is so much to cover. I would love to know what classics did you read that you were so glad you did and which ones do you wish you missed.
I want to do at least one Twain, Washington Irving, Hemingway, Poe, London,
Who do I need to have them read to fill in gaps and give them an overview of American literature?

in poetry I need to do some Longfellow, Wheatly,Sandberg, Dickenson, Cummings, Alcot and someone current like Angelou or Shelden
