Interesting read, as is the comment below by modelportfolio2003.

Search is critical to Google, with Android very important, but just one of the ways to drive custom to their search and advertising, so while Page was choosing his words with an eye to the lawsuit, he's probably right.

Explains Google's position very clearly on why they think APIs cannot be copyrighted, only their implementation can.
