Kobo Touch with Glowlight

Just saw that Barnes & Noble will be releasing the Nook with Glowlight shortly.

A built in lighting solution for reading in the dark or where lighting conditions are poor to me seems an an absolute killer feature for pretty much anyone who uses an ereader. Battery life is estimated to be around a month with the glowlight feature on.

I'd be tempted to order one of these but on the other hand, being a Kobo fan, would rather invest in a Kobo touch that has this cool functionality.

Though B&N claim some patency on some of the technology, I'm hoping Kobo releases something like this sooner than later!

The technology is not unique to B&N, they have developed it in house apparently, but there are other companies out there that have similar solutions (Amazon actually bought one of them), so there is a possibility that Kobo has one in the works, just as Amazon is rumoured to have one. But I doubt we will know any time soon, these things are kept under wraps as much as possible. The nook was hinted at only 1 or 2 weeks ago, and the leak with the picture showing the glowlight feature came just the day before the announcement.

Likely battery life disclaimer: "Battery life is based on reading 15 minutes per day, using the glowlight for 5 of the 15." (Sorry, I'm a little cynical toward battery life claims)

I agree that battery life claims need to be taken with a pinch of salt, but my personal experience with the nook touch is very good, I get about 4 weeks between charges, reading 2 hours a day or more some days.

I have been looking forward to an FCC announcement toward the middle/end of April. Kobo released the Touch last year at the BookExpo America in New York. This year's expo will take place June 4-7. Last year the FCC filing happened six weeks before the Touch was released.

My sense was that the Nook announcement might have come a bit early in an attempt to lessen the effect of the DOJ inquiry involving publishers and Apple. B&N stock took a big hit anyway Thursday and Friday.

I don't expect any leaks from Kobo. And this is all pure speculation on my part.

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/gadgetrevi...t-screen/29196 The second comment is requesting 4-6GB or RAM? They must mean storage lol.

It looks cool but if Kobo does introduce a new Kobo with Glowlight, but if they do I hope they don't mess with anything else, I'd be pretty mad if they stopped updating firmware on the KT since it can do so much more.

I read another review that said the extra glowlight layer effects the clarity (Not much but noticeable when you're not in the dark) and it's a little more reflective.

Actually the disclaimer actually reads "Battery life is based on reading 30 minutes per day." If you read further it says that with it off you can go for 2 months at 30 minutes a day.. I don't know about other people but I usually read for about 2hrs average per session. I guess that means I will have to charge it every week with the glowlight on. :P

I'd be happy to upgrade to a Kobo with Glowlight in the future, as long as it looks as good as the photos of the Nook screen and doesn't have any significant negatives (other than battery life, of course). I've tried the clip-on LED lights, and I don't like them at all - they're awkward to carry around, they light the screen unevenly, they're another battery to worry about. I won't mind having to buy a new Kobo - I've certainly gotten my purchase price worth of value out of the KT in less than a year.
