The Story the Soldiers Wouldn't Tell: Sex in the Civil War by Thomas P. Lowry, MD, is a quasi-academic history of exactly what it says in the title, free courtesy of publisher Stackpole who've given us a number of nifty military histories in the past.

Free @ Amazon (not available to Canadians). Unlikely to show up elsewhere, as previous Stackpole freebies have been Amazon-only.

Description (frankendescription cobbled together from the e-book and hardcover versions of the blurb, both of which are not particularly good, but at least the editorial reviews give you decent detail)

Sounds interesting. The author is being accused of tampering with documents in the National Archives in the Amazon coments. I found an article on it.

It's rather sad that supposedly professional academics who really ought to know better would resort to such. But then, Stephen E. Ambrose plagiarized for decades, and Orlando Figes claims his wife wrote all those Amazon reviews savaging his rivals' books and praising his own (but at least he didn't tamper with documents and use other people's words uncredited, which is like a teeny-tiny bit of redemption from the overall fail).

And somewhere on the internet, there's a really funny slapfight between two string theorists which involved one of them accusing the other of offering to pay $20 to strangers for writing 1-star online reviews of the other latest book. But it's on a site I can't link to because of a family-unfriendly word in the domain name.
