Questions about KT
Hello all,
I finally got my Kindle touch, with 5.1.0 installed in it. It looks like a nifty device ![]() So I have 2 questions, I am not sure if it's a good place to ask them, so I am sorry if I did something wrong. 1-) I read quite long threads here but didn't really understand how to JB my KT 5.1.0. I read something about some tar.gz method and someone else mentioned that simple debricking method still works for 5.1.0. Is it this one: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=170929 2-) Is there a working way to remove ads on my KT? I read something about it here : https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=161263 . Is it this one, does it work at 5.1.0 ? 3-) I am a newbie about Kindle devices, so I really don't know what to do before doing some fancy stuff to my device. Can I just copy paste all the files in KT to my computer as a backup purpose in case something messed up? Can I just access to my KT via windows explorer (for windows), or do I need to use putty or other stuff? Thanks a lot for your answers. |

1)
Jailbreak: https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kind....tar.gz_method 2) Removing ads: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=175512 3) No, Windows explorer won't do. In case it bricks, you need to get your hands dirty. See the Wiki page, and the sticky thread in the developers' corner forum. Up to you to decide. Generally, if you're only using the device (i.e. if you only used tested and verified methods to modify your device), and don't poke around a lot in the system internals by yourself, the risk of a real FUBAR brick is low. And even then, there is always a remedy. |

There have also been reports of bricks caused by registering a newer kindle to an amazon account that has too many books linked to it. Something as symbol as synchronizing your kindle to your amazon account can apparently brick a kindle (probably caused by the 30MB persistent user storage limitation). The debricking tools have been downloaded MANY hundreds of times, so I think that a most of successful debricking goes unreported, and a lot of this happens to people who use their kindles ONLY to read books. |

To remove ads on your Kindle, go to the "Manage my Kindle" page at Amazon, and you'll be able to remove the ads from there.

Bonjurkes,
My opinions: a) there are ways to remove the ads. You got a bargain price by agreeing to receive the ads. Either live with them or learn enough to understand the processes required to remove them. And accept those risks. b) backing up your documents and active.content folders can indeed save some effort if you have to do a 'Reset to Factory Defaults'. Or if Amazon decides you are so hosed that they send you a new one. You can get most of your stuff back from Archives but a USB copy and paste is faster. You still have to set up your Collections either way. c) jailbreaking was originally worth it to me so that I could have Landscape view. That is now available in 5.1.0 except for web browsing, which is where I really want it. Jailbreak has not yet solved that. There are lots of other geeky capabilities it offers but they are not (yet) drop in solutions. Unless you really find following threads fascinating (I do), I suggest you wait on the Jailbreaking until someone offers something you cannot live without. -----Paul----- |

You can do as HarryT said and purchase the $40USD upgrade to a non-SO Kindle Touch from your amazon account. Your ads will go away automatically when you sync your kindle (or leave wireless turned on when you go to screensaver mode).
There are hacks to disable special offsers, but several of them have caused bricked kindles, so do your research and use a reliable method IF you choose to do that. Do not use one that is NOT for your specific firmware version. I trust ixtab's advice if you choose to go that route. Personally, I like my ads and the ad screensavers. They are not intrusive and they tend to be artistic and tasteful, and they bring a little variety as well. Last edited by geekmaster; 06-03-2012 at 10:14 PM. |

Is there any software out there for a non-jailbroken Kindle Touch to manage collections?

The jailbreak allows you to install signed update*.bin files. Most hacks for the K4 and K5 install using unsigned files using either the "data.tar.gz" and RUNME.sh method, or can be installed directly using an SSH command prompt on the kindle. In otherwords, on the newer kindles you can install hacks WITHOUT jailbreaking the device. |

Not that any software is required; personally I find the Kindle's built-in collection management facilities entirely satisfactory.

![]() To initially set up collections on a new Kindle is really easy. If you don't want to take the time to set them up on the Kindle itself, you can use K4PC in Windows and set them up that way. Then simply import them. You have to load all the books of course. I owned the PRS-505, 300, 350, 600, 900, and 950. Trust me, managing collections on a Kindle is a much better experience than the one provided by Sony. |

I don't even know how to do it on my Sony T1....I use Calibre to do it. Trying to manage the books on the device is completely over my head. I guess I am used to the ease of managing books on my K3! |

Some of the hacks let you hide some collections (private stuff), and password-protect some books. Useful for a shared kindle.

@davidampuero: You do not need to cross-post in so many different threads in this and other forums (and PMs to me too)...
It is especially inappropriate to cross-post mostly to K5(touch) threads, when you say it is a K4 that you bricked. You still have not posted to the "simple debricking" sticky thread in the Kindle Developer's Corner forum as I told you to yesterday... I copied some of the PMs there though. Do you intend to go back and read the replies in all the threads that you posted this to? Last edited by geekmaster; 06-05-2012 at 08:43 AM. |
