Sync between iPad and Kobo Touch

Can anyone tell me if there is a specific way this should be done. I can't find any detailed instructions anywhere and whether either of my devices updates is hit or miss. A change of book if never updated.
On my home network:
When I bookmark and return to the homepage the touch has the message updating .....
When I open my iPad often it hasn't updated even if I have refreshed.
When do I need to do sync on the touch as it says it's updating?
I do use sync on networks that don't connect automatically. Hooray for the experimental browser, often networks have to be accepted using that.
Does the iPad app only refresh when you are in the library?
I am just confused by all the inconsistencies. If anyone can direct me to detailed instructions I would devour them! The Kobo ones are very limited.
Thank you.

I'm not sure when exactly the Touch syncs bookmarks up/down, but the iOS app pulls down bookmarks when refreshing the library, as well as when opening a book (or launching the app into a book) where the local bookmark is 5 minutes older or more.

Pretty sure touch will check the bookmark when you open a book, when you manually sync changes, and also when you sleep the device (or it sleeps automatically if that option is set).

Thanks to both of you for your 'take' on what should happen. It's what I thought and expected it just doesn't work all the time. Changing to a new book I always have to do manually.
Thanks again.
