Review of Oberon Kindle Touch Cover with PRS-T1

I recently purchased an Oberon Kindle Touch cover for my PRS-T1 and thought I would share my experience. I really love it and am very pleased! Insert happy dance here. I am a big Oberon fan and have purchased several products from them. The quality of their workmanship is top-notch and worth the price. They build your cover when you order. It takes almost a week to create and then ship. I recommend USPS for delivery rather than UPS since that has been faster for me. They use USPS Global Express for international destinations although I imagine it's expensive. An important item to note is that it has a wool pocket on the inside cover. An option is to request them to eliminate the wool if you have an allergy. It also attracts pet hair.

I chose Camelot in Saddle Brown. I have previously purchased the Red Hummingbird and Green Paisley designs for other ereaders. They are all gorgeous designs! Good luck deciding on a color and pattern. It's a tough choice! I also have a DecalGirl skin on my T1 (Paris Makes Me Happy) as you'll see in the photos. Here is a link to the Oberon website:
http://www.oberondesign.com/Kindle-Touch-e-Reader.php

Unfortunately Oberon doesn't make a cover specific to the T1. I compared the dimensions of the T1 to the new Kindle eink models. I've put the dimensions below (sources Amazon and Sony websites):

Kindle Touch: 6.8" x 4.7" x 0.40"
Sony T1: 6.875" x 4.375" x 0.375"
Kindle Non-Touch: 6.5" x 4.5" x 0.34"

I thought the Kindle Non-Touch would be too tight. Therefore, I went with the Kindle Touch. Happily the straps do not cover any of the buttons or the screen. The height is nearly identical. The difference in width is not as large as it seems. It's only about 0.16" narrower on either side of the T1. The covers are meant to be a tight fit with the device that they are designed for. Therefore, they can accommodate a slightly smaller device and still be a good fit. Plus, one strap is elastic which holds the T1 very securely. There is no motion vertically and just a little horizontally. I think it fits better than my Sony 950 does in the Kindle 2 cover. You could always use velcro to attach to the back cover if you think the fit is too loose. My experience with the Kindle 2 case is that even after a year the case still seems like new, and the straps have not stretched out of shape.

You can fold the front cover back to read although it is a bit bulky. My experience is that it flattens over time with use. It also came with extra elastic so you can replace the upper right corner and cover latch straps if it stretches out. I attached a comparison photo with the Sony lighted cover. The Oberon case is just a little bit larger in height and similar in width. You can hook the stylus on the inside radius, and it doesn't feel like it will fall off.

Another option is that Oberon makes ereader sleeves. bjkel has posted some photos of the sleeve with the T1. Here is a link to those photos.
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...9&postcount=64

There is more good news! soloist66 has bought a Kindle Touch cover to use with the 650. You can find photos and more info in this post link.

I also have an Oberon Kindle 2 cover that I use with my 950. You can find that review at this link.

Thank you for posting this. I have a Sony lighted cover for my T1, which I don't like very much, so I've been looking into some alternatives. Sadly, there don't seem to be a whole lot of manufacturers who make covers explicitly for the T1, so it's nice to know when ones intended for other devices are a good fit.

Well, I just ordered my very first Oberon cover. They're on break for the holidays until tomorrow, and they'll probably have a backlog to catch up on before they get to mine, but hopefully I receive it early next week or something. If I like the cover, I might get another one for my Nook Tablet

I hope you like it! They were over capacity with orders before Christmas so they might have a bit of a backlog. Hopefully the wait isn't too long. It usually takes about 3 business days to make your order, and they were on a 5 day cycle when I bought mine because of the holiday rush. They are good about sending emails, and you'll get a tracking number when it ships.

How can this be better than the Sony cover?

The Sony cover even accommodates the stylus being clipped to the inside of the spine.

Wow! Check out the decal, man! And I thought people got distracted by some minor reflections on the bezel. No doubt it looks cool though, esp. with the stbyscreen.

Ha ha! I was worried the skin might be too distracting, but it was so interesting I thought I'd give it a try. So far so good. I might swap it out for another design in a few months if I get tired of it. The glossy bezel was far more distracting, and the reflections weren't minor to me. I was just in the mood for something different.

Yeah, I used to think the glossy bezel wasn't a big deal until I used my T1 in an airport with tons of ambient and fluorescent lighting that really kicked the glare up to a level I hadn't experienced before, so now I'm considering a decal skin to cover it. Decalgirl makes a simple black one, and I might go with that.

I'm expecting a wait and it's not a big deal. I just got a Nook Tablet so it's been getting all the attention lately because it's new.

I wish I had seen this review prior to ordering my Gecko cover. I like the Gecko cover fine, but I've been lusting to order an Oberon, and wasn't sure if any would fit the T1. Oh well, maybe for my birthday.

Nice!! The Kindle touch covers fit really nicely. I would of been concerned about the strap covering the buttons but from the pictures doesn't seem a problem. I still like my sleeve too, though.

Everybody has different preferences. They each have their pros & cons. I don't like the laminated look of the T1 Sony cover compared to the X50 models. I also miss the material from the 505/600 covers. The black material of the cover collects dust easily. Also, I think the width of the sides of the T1 is too narrow and should be wider. I find the lip of the side of the Sony cover to be uncomfortable on my thumb after long periods of times. On the other hand, the Sony cover is light-weight, and I really like the integrated light. I don't think that I would ever hook the stylus on it since it seems too loose. I would probably lose it.

The Oberon cover is real leather and truly a work of art. Just gorgeous! That's why their fans are so passionate about their products. I was at a hotel and saw one of their journals in the gift shop and just knew that I had to get one of their ereader covers! I like customization so that I can match my ereader to my personality. It makes me smile every time I pick it up to read.

Cool, my Oberon cover finally arrived--Celtic Hounds in the wine color. It's really well-made and I think it's pretty awesome, although I'm a little skeptical about the felt lining inside the front cover. It seems like particles of stuff might collect in it over time, but no biggie.

The only problem is that I've added a Kindle Touch to my eReader collection during my wait and now I want another Oberon--maybe River Garden in red. Or saddle. But the red looks really good in this video:

For your next one, you can request having it made without the felt lining. I had the felt lining and the pocket left out, so the inside cover is just smooth black leather. I like it much better, as the felt lining is supposed to attract pet hair and also some people find it itchy.

Dang, and I just placed an order too. It looks like if I act quickly, I can call a toll-free number to change an aspect of the order, but I'm unconvinced the black felt bothers me enough to go to the trouble. It seems like it might provide a slight cushioning layer to protect the screen when closed. I'm not worried about pet hair and figure if anything gets trapped in it, I can probably remove it with a piece of tape or something.

One thing I've noticed about the felt is that it sheds tiny black hairs onto the screen. Is this a characteristic of new felt that clears up after a while, or is it always going to do this? Regardless, I'm happy with the overall craftsmanship and the way it makes the reader feel when holding it.

Hooray! I'm glad you like your cover!

You should only see a few pieces of hair shed from the felt when it is brand-new. It shouldn't do that long-term. Also, I have never had any issues with particles or dirt getting caught in the felt. It's just cat hair that I have an issue with but that seems to be attracted to everything...
