They might not call it a boycott but what library in these times could afford those prices? Not good use of their funds. A boycott in all but name.

I love Nova Scotia.

Very good people to work with.

Now the next question is:

What is Newfoundland going to do?

Also to Rarebird, please indicate more in your title line. I almost skipped this because there wasn't much info in title.

Noted SeaKing. I've edited it. Who knows what Newfoundland will do? Hopefully more provincal libraries will join in. Rare Birds was a good flick and book and since I'm originally from Newfoundland I thought it would be a great handle as an homage to all three.

We were near/at Nova Scotia about 1984 plus a year maybe. I remember about middle December that there was a snow storm in Newfoundland, about 90CM in about 24 hours that was collapsing even those sharply pitched roofs you had. Not good to fly in unless you had Santa's snow sleigh. That year a month or so before they had an airliner go into the brink over at Boston. Failure to deice properly plus wind shear, maybe just like the Siberia plane this past week.

Pretty amazing. Our weather people went crazy.

(I was talking about the title of this thread not your name.)

Are they boycotting Random House ebooks or ALL Random House books? The article doesn't really say. It's an interesting dilemma. It's not really a boycott unless they stop acquiring Random House books in any format. If I don't like Coke's aluminum can policies, but I buy Coke in bottles, is that a boycott? And yet, if it were a total boycott, do they have an obligation to get the titles that their patrons want? What about the patrons who could care less about ebooks (the vast majority of their patrons), and wonder why the library doesn't have the latest book by their favorite author?

Anyway, I think high ebooks prices are better than not allowing libraries to buy your ebooks. Let's see some big libraries stop acquiring any Simon & Schuster titles, in any format, until they offer library ebooks.

My understanding is that is just the ebooks. I agree that it would be a more effective boycott if it was all Random House books but the issue is the cost of ebooks which is why I guess they chose that as the target of the boycott.

But my point is, if they boycott the ebooks (based on the cost), and continue to buy the pbooks, then how have they hurt Random House?

And you're absolutely right. I guess I wasn't clear in my earlier agreement by saying it would be a more effective boycott. I guess I should have called it a true boycott if they didn't purchase books at all from Random House.
