Which kinds of ebooks can Iliad read?

My Iliad arrives on Monday... yayyyyyy!

I would like to know which kinds of ebooks it can read.

I know about Mobipocket already but are there other commercial ones? Either that it can read directly or that I could convert somehow. eg I saw a book on eBooks.com that I'd like to read but it only seems to be Adobe... is that PDF? (The book is Cynthia Freeland, Art Theory: A Very Short Introduction)

I've been reading here abut PDF files - a lot of old books I have are in that format - so I'll figure out reformatting them. are there other formats used for ebooks of old titles that are preferable or are easily converted to something that can be read?

Thanks
Amanda

PDFs you purchase will probably be unreadable on any of the eInk devices. The issue is that PDF is not an eBook format. It's a page layout format.

When the PDF is created it's created for a specific page size - normally the same size as paper (like 8.5"x11"). The iLiad will shrink down the page to fit on the display, so unless a large font size is used, the resulting book will be pretty much unreadable.

You can use the PDF zoom/pan functions, but I find such functions to be cumbersome. Like trying to read a book through a keyhole.

PDFs take alot of work to reformat. PDF was designed to be a static format - unchangable by the end user. So much of the formatting information in the original document is lost in the PDF.

Anything in an open format (html, ODF, text) can be easily converted into a PDF that's formatted for the page size of the iLiad.

I keep all my eBooks in ODF. Then, when I want to read an eBook on my iLiad, I simply set the page size of the document to the iLiad (about 5x6.5") and export the document as a PDF.

I find PDFs quite readable on the iLiad. I zoom to eliminate margins, put the mode in "continuous," and I'm fine. On the rare occasion that the text is still too small that way, I use landscape orientation in continuous mode.

It's quite an individual experience, I think.

Be sure and read the wiki on this site. It is a collection point for all kinds of facts and answers to questions you might have on the iLiad. Then the forums can be used for clarification and idea sharing.

PS For any Aussie looking for an Iliad - Dymocks website says they're out of stock - but Central Book Services has them too. Last I heard they had 25 - um - make than 24

I have just bought my iLiad also...

The PDF books that I have, mostly, can be read perfectly on my iLiad. Very happy with the purchase.
