So you removed the DRM from your Kindle ebook, now what?

Do you keep it on the device? If so, do you need to keep the Kindle unregistered? Or is the nonDRM copy just for archival purposes?

unDRM-ed books will work perfectly fine on a registered Kindle. However, only DRM-ed versions of your purchases will backup your notes and highlights to the cloud, in my experience*.

* This may be tweakable by loading your stripped books as Personal Documents, which is not a service available to Canadians, so I can't tell.

Personal documents are available to Canadian accounts. At least it works on my Kindle.

Yeah, I see I misread the Kindle Help document which says that it's just not available via Whispernet to Canadians and we have to do it all manually via some baroque mailing-to-Amazon and then transferring-via-USB process.

I remove DRM to archive the book. I leave the purchased version on the device. However, I have books with stripped DRM and conversions from other stores on the device. Its all ok so far.

I put DRM stripped Amazon books onto my registered Kindle from calibre. Amazon doesn't care.

All my Amazon books have DRM removed and loaded into Calibre and then if I want to read the book I tweak it in Calibre adding Indentation, Paragraph spacing....etc then send to my Personal Documents cloud to sync with all my Kindles.

My normal workflow is to buy the book, have it downloaded via computer, import into Calibre (which strips the DRM), edit the Metadata as needed, convert to MOBI if I bought it from Kobo or B&N or whomever, and then send to my Kindle from Calibre. If my wife wants to read the book, she grabs it from Calibre or Amazon, doesn't matter. If I want to read it on the Kindle Fire, I send it from Calibre. And sync still works across all devices.

Amazon doesn't give a hoot about whether the DRM is on it or not.

I hope it's OK to ask this, but do these tools actually remove the DRM or do they just leave the key in the lock, so to speak?

They remove the DRM. They may not necessarily remove other potentially identifying information, if that happens to be a concern.

I'm just wondering what AA means when he says that they don't actually crack the DRM, they just use the key (PID) to decrypt it. When the tool is finished, do you have an unencrypted file or an encrypted file with the PID somehow embedded in there.
