Kobo Touch buy 'With Offers' or 'Without Offers'?
I just bought a Kobo Touch at a local Target, my first ebook reader. It was not revealed on the box or by the salesman that it was the model "With Offers". I am tempted to take it back and buy a Kobo Touch without offers from the Kobo web site if that Target doesn't have one. I'd like some opinions about the two models and the choice. What do you think?

As far as I'm aware of the difference between the two, the screen shows ads instead of the coverpage of the last book you opened before going into sleep mode or turning off.(generic cover if you erased that book before going into sleep or off mode) Everything else should work the same.

In my opinion the main disadvantage of the "offer" version is not the advertisement instead of the cover but the lack of ability to keep it in sleep mode. The offer allows only 60 minutes of sleep - there is no way to set the power off timer to "never". So in normal usage you have to accept that you are going to to wait before reading the way longer boot time from powered off mode instead of the almost instant power on from sleep mode.

Has anyone tried a Kobo Touch With Offers in Canada? It's U$70 at BB (US) until today and I'm sure will be around again. I assume it would work in Canada, since Americans do visit, but could it be registered here, and could it be use solely in Canada, connect to Canadian libraries, etc.?
Thanks! =aw |

I don't see why it wouldn't work. The two issues that you may encounter are buying books from Kobo (doubtful) and warranty support (probable).
You don't have to give Kobo your mailing address when you register your device, so they cannot tell from that part of the process. It doesn't connect directly to your library either, that's Adobe Digital Edition's job. So they can't tell from that part of the process either. |

Thanks, I figured warranty would be a challenge for sure but hadn't thought about buying (guess I assume I'll be buying from various sources). Mostly I worried that there could be challenges if ads couldn't be updated for an extended period (e.g. forever). If they're targetted based on IP, e.g. getting NYS offers when in NYS and FL offers when in FL that could be a challenge.

FWIW, it's 89 CAD for the regular Kobo Touch at Future Shop just now. With the exchange rate and possible warranty issues, it might be worth spending the extra bucks to buy it in Canada.

Yeah, there is a convenience factor. Getting it to US for warranty service would be no harder than picking up there. It would probably be 6% VT tax (>48hr visit to a friend) vs. 13% HST too, so there's another $7 or so saving ($70+6% vs $90+13%).
I probably won't be buying on either the BB or FS sale this week, it will be around again I'm sure (especially if a better one comes along). I see from "Similar Threads" that it was U$70 at Christmas and US Thanksgiving. I wish they sold with offers in Canada. =aw |

BTW I assume as always with a sale one would buy the Kobo at Best Buy? Under their Lowest Price Guarantee it would be $88 (only a buck less, but hey you have to drive somewhere right?)

Ahhh, the old HST thing you guys face. In Alberta we have only the federal GST. It makes a difference. Then again, it takes me 6 hours to get to the border and then another hour to reach a town with actual stores.

I think the proximity of the border (and having friends there who will hold it for a 48hr visit) is the biggest difference, the extra 7% tax not as much.
Not sure I'd even want the Offers version, I read in another thread that it won't stay on standby for as long, for some reason. It would be nice to have audiobooks/music capability, and I'm wondering when the next versions of the eReaders will come (I know that's another thread). =aw |
