Laptop does not 'see' e-reader

Have only had the Sony Touch Screen E-reader since December and managed to load books okay at first. However, now I have the following problem.

I have powered up the e-reader by a cable going from the reader to the mains - works fine, fully powered. When I plug the e-reader into the laptop, message comes up, Charging stopped, no power supply detected etc. etc'. Also on the Calibre screen there is no icon for 'device', the laptop just doesn't see it. If I go to the 'Computer' screen there is no recognition that an e-reader has been plugged in. Is it likely to be something as simple as a faulty cable?

It could be a faulty cable. I had a cable that when I plugged in a 505, it would allow the computer to see it and then stop seeing it and back and forth. it was the cable.

From what I have read on MR, one thing to try is using a different USB port. Also, if it's a USB hub you have the 650 plugged into, that could possibly be an issue.

Also if you have another computer you could try plugging the 650 into that and see what happens.

Thanks for that. I've tried all the USB ports and no its not through a hub. I think, since the cables are so cheap, I just ought to go ahead and try a new one. Havenot got another computer handy to try it out on.

I've had the same problem with my boox for months now. The only way I can get books on it is by removing the sd card und using the card reader on my computer. Then I use the Connect/share button from calibre to connect to the sd card.

The computer can still charge the boox but doesn't see it as hardware or a drive. Tried different cables, ports and computers but no change.

I hope you have better luck.
