New 650 or T1

After 18 months of perfection My 650 is suddenly losing all charge in 2 days. I dont know if it has run out of life or whether there is a fix i can try. I always charge from external power and havent done anything different that I can think of. Im gutted really as it has been brilliant

But if there is no cure I am unsure whether or not to get the T1 as im not sure how it works in the UK ie do we get access to the Sony shop or do we just use it like we do the 650 now. Also are people still having trouble with the flashing and page turns.
I can get a new 650 off Ebay and have been really pleased with my one up until now that is, so that is an option

appreciate any advice, especially from uk owners

Thanks
Mike

Try this:

Delete all books on your reader or format the reader. Copy just one or two books onto the reader and go on using your reader.

Quick discharging is sometimes caused by one distinct Ebook (whatever the technical reason is). Deleting this Ebook removes the problem. If that was the root fo the problem.

I would give the 650 this chance because it's a very good product.

650m from ebay:
Hm, I would be unsure too. A used reader has a used battery which could have reduced lifetime.

A.

Ebay is nominally an auction - so the usual applies, "let the buyer beware" .......

I love my x50's, and my T1 - they're just different animals.

If it is the battery you might consider replacing it or having it replaced. Search for PRS-650 teardown.

PRS-T1 is pretty nice overall and the problems are over in seconds. My 350 sklps pages on occasion. Page refresh etc. Is a bit weird (random) at times, but not often enough for me to be irritated. I would not have bought one, but I got it as a gift and I use it as my main reader.
I really like the changing fonts thing.
On the T1 I had battery issues in that it would only last 4-6 days and suddenly it was out of battery. Battery indicator would just go from full to empty. I discharged it (probably the wrong thing to do) but has been 11 days and still working without being connected to any power source. I read about 250 pages a day, sometimes more.

My best advice is to thoroughly clean screen and around bezel as sometimes a little piece of dirt can make the reader think it should be checking for input or whatever it does.
My 350 drains really fast if it has anything touching it's screen even when in sleep mode.

Other than that if it is the battery, try to replace it or have it replaced.

You can also try both a soft reset or a hard reset.

Soft reset is not a big deal. My 650 occasionally drains the batter in 1 - 2 days. A soft reset stops it.

A hard reset will erase everything on the reader, so make sure you are ready to reload them.

@Kiwimick

If you have an SD card try using it without.

Just curious if your battery bars go down normally. My T1 would go from full to empty suddenly when it was losing it's charge.

Usually it would lose 1 bar after around 6 days reading around 2- 2 1/2 hours a day and then it would go down another bar after 4 days and it would go down to 1 bar after another 2/3 days so it would be down to 1 bar after about hust under 2 weeks.

Sunday I charged up using my charger overnight and it was fine Mondayy but on Tues it was down a bar so i charged it up again thinking I had done something wrong. Wed It was again full bars only it only lasted until I opened it on the tube on the way home and it was down a bar already. I didnt charge t but when I opened it thurs morning on the tube it was down 2 bars and in the evening it came up low battery with no bars.

I took every book off it and put 3 on and charged it right up last night and am waiting to see what happens. Then I will probably try the resets and stuff.

Oh and I dont use a SD card

@Kwimick
Thanks for the info. I am totally puzzled by my Sony readers and their charging patterns.
For instance I recharged my 350 last night on the Sony wall charger. I left it on overnight and the light was out. Today I connected it via USB to my computer and it proceeded to charge for another hour. I was most surprised as I had just disconnected it from wall charger less than a minute before and it read as fully charged.

Makes me think your battery might be fine, just that Sony battery meter reading may be at fault.

I would do the reset things and format memory first.

Second I would put it into perspective. Buy an new ereader if you can afford one comfortably or live with it as it is. you can still read for 2 days and with the 650 you can still read while charging. Worst case you forget to charge and are away from electricity. AFAIK even if batter is dead you can still read when plugged into charger.

Third I would try and discharge battery as much as possible by turning it on till it won't turn on anymore and then recharging. Not best practice, but deperate times etc.

Helen

PS you can confirm or debunk the bad ebook theory by putting zero books on it after factory reset.

Hi Helen

havent done any reset yet. I took all the books off and just put 3 on. I also thoroughly cleaned the screen. I charged it up overnight on 01/03 and it was still full bars last night so I put on some more books that I knew were on there before the problem and it is still full bars now (Sunday) so fingers crossed.
I will have to see how long this charge lasts to see how it goes.

Hi

If you're charging from the charger, check to see if you're connecting the usb-cable firmly into the reader-micro-usb slot. Sometimes, it doesn't connect firmly and even though you charge 2hours (and verify the red light going off), the battery will drain (despite not reading) in just 2 days.

To verify that this is indeed the case, try charging from the PC and a diff usb-cable, and if the charge holds then voila! you'll know that your battery is fine and that you have to 'properly' (*) insert the usb-cable of the charger the next time you charge through it.

(*) I'm sorry I can't describe this any better because its more an intuitive thing.

HTH

Maybe the 650 design is fundamentally flawed. My next purchase, if it is a sony, is unlikely to be an x50. I would suggest you get a T1 for this reason, but then maybe the T1's will start to die in 18 months...

I think the OP's problem went away and it wasn't her battery. Could be wrong. In general it seems that the x50's are more reliable software wise than the T1.

I like the T1 but it is no better than the x50's and can do some peculiar things on occasion. (Well several times a month in my experience)
