Need help with Author sort

I hit some key combination or clicked on something accidentally, and now my Authors sort is unusable. I can set the subcategorization scheme to "partition" or I can disable it, but I cannot set it to "by first letter" - says "first letter is usable only when sorting by name". I have sorted the book list by author name, but that doesn't seem to help. I really don't know what I did. All I want is the old way - author names by first letter, but I can't find it.

I would be very grateful if anyone could help.

Duh! I found it - the "Sort by name" at the bottom. I need to learn more of the features of this tool.
