what is the major different between the two?

Need a larger Ereader to read large amount of pdf.

I think the biggest difference is that the Boox has a Pearl screen and the Pocketbook has not.

How do they compare stability-wise? I believe that both Pocketbook and Onyx have had issues with bugs in their firmware. Is one significantly more stable than the other?

I'd suggest that you also consider a tablet for reading PDFs. Both the iPad and Android tablets are excellent choices for reading and annotating PDFs.

These two are both great readers. And both are at almost the same level, mas o menos. If we don't take into consideration differences in the look of menus, PocketBook does have a Text-to-Speech, specially in Russian. Boox has better, easier to use web-browswer.
All this is my humble opinion.
