Cannot delete periodicals on K4 Touch

Each day I have Calibre compile daily newspapers etc and send then to my kindle 4 touch. This works fine, but they pile up and I cannot seem to delete them!! When I touch and hold on the periodical in the home page, no sub menu comes up [delete etc] like it does for items like books. On the K3, and K4 NT it put the older ones in the archives folder as new ones came in. Has anyone else observed this - not a big big deal as i just delete them once a week from my computer - just curious

This seems to be a bug, and it affects periodicals that you send to your Kindle via your @kindle.com email address which are also archived by Amazon. When you tap-and-hold a periodical that you sent to yourself (via Calibre, Instapaper, SendToReader.com, Readability, etc), a menu will not appear. Nothing happens at all, in fact.

There are two ways around it right now.
  1. Turn off the archiving of personal documents that you send to your Kindle (this can be done on Amazon's Web site).
  2. Delete the document in your personal documents archive. Tap Menu, then "Sync and Check for New Items", on the Kindle itself.

If you now tap on the periodical you want to delete, it will display the menu, and one of the options in the menu will be to delete the document. I turned off archiving of personal documents, for now, since it is easier than going to Amazon's site to delete individual documents first before deleting them on the Kindle. I also use SendToReader.com to send everything to my Kindle, and that service already keeps a copy of everything I send, so I haven't lost anything. If you email documents directly to your Kindle, however, they will not be archived anywhere.

Here's a bit more detail.

There's another thread about this here:

Basically, you have to delete them from your Archived Items first before you can delete them using the interface on the Touch.

Excellent replies. At least for now there is a workaround / they were mostly newspapers which i do not need to archive anyway. Thanks again!

Could you not delete them directly from the "documents" folder of the Kindle via the USB connection?

This could be problematic for indexing function

Why more so than for books? I always delete books that way.

also for books, too.

Don't know exactly but when you delete items this way, entries created for them in index file still survive hence this lead to a bigger index file.

Maybe someone with more info will clarify this issue.

the bookmarklet code worked great - I also changed the setting so amazon no longer archives personal documents - for me not necessary as it is all calibre stuff - everything now works properly!
Thanks again - especially for the javascript!!
