PDF test

Would anyone be willing to tell me how well the Fire handles the PDF at this link?

http://www.archive.org/details/retreattocommitm00bart

Perfectly legal scanned copy of a book. The ABBYY OCR absolutely gums up the works on even the new iPad, but when I briefly had a Nook Tablet I had some luck with a similar (though smaller) PDF.

I know it won't be very readable in full screen. I'm really just looking to see if you can flip pages and render at a reasonable rate. My iPad is lucky to render a page in less that 8 seconds on this thing.

Many thanks.

My desktop computer with the 2.8 gig quad core processor with 10 gig RAM and the 64 bit OS was slow to render each page.
2 to 3 seconds for each page to appear when turning.

I would not even consider trying it on my Fire.

Just tried it, the Kindle could barely even render it. Just the cover and lots of white pages.

Trying to render with GhostScript gives me a lot of these:
Code:
**** ERROR: Unable to process JPXDecode data. Page will be missing data.
The file's just broken, or protected somehow. Acrobat Reader renders it extremely slowly on my 2x3Ghz machine.

To make this file usable, you have to make a fresh PDF out of it, that doesn't suffer from breakage or doesn't contain instructions that makes it slow to render (e.g. no layers).

This PDF, like every other one that I've dealt with from Archive.org, is a very complex layered file. They seem to like having a bitmap image of the "paper" behind a transparent image layer with the text. This is hard to render onscreen, requiring some significant processing to render. In fact, my Kindle3 fails to display the transparent text layer at all, or at least seems to fail as I've never given it any more that 60 seconds or so to finish displaying a page.

I've been successful in producing a much simpler PDF from the Archive.org PDFs by printing to disk using a PDF virtual printer driver. This produces a flattened PDF that is much smaller and much more usable on low resource devices (read: portable tablets and ereaders). Printing will be slow. Acrobat Reader on my machine (2.2ghz P4, WinXP) takes about 15-30sec/page to generate the flattened version of most of the Archive.org PDFs.

The PDF printer driver I've used for years is PrimoPDF.

Thank you all very much for giving it a go. And really appreciate the tip, dwig. I'll give that program a try.

edit: follow up. Thanks Dwig! PrimoPDF kept crashing, but I did the same thing with doPDF and it yielded PDFs that work just fine. Great tip.
