Sony Reader for PC (v1.1) - extra columns in collections
Hi,
First of all, apologies if this isn't the right forum for this question, but it didn't seem to fit in the Sony ereader category! Since I got my PRS-T1 (after my PRS-505 broke *{:-( ), I've had to use the brand new Reader, otherwise I can't transfer my books. I've noticed that organising collections is now much more difficult - the old Reader Library software ordered the collections how I wanted them, which was very handy, but the new version doesn't. Since the collections came out how I wanted them when I sync'd with the T1, I wasn't too fussed. However, I've just added a large amount of books to the Reader software, and some of the series I'm putting into collections are quite large. It makes it tricky to work out if I've got everything in the series order when I can't make it display it in the right order! There's a "Date Added" column, but since I have added everything in the series to the collection today, that's not much use. Anyway, I deleted all the books from one of my existing collections, and added books back to it, to get them in the right order, and somehow the books wouldn't show up in the collection, despite it saying there were books in the collection on the previous screen! After restarting the software, I've noticed that this collection now has a series of extra columns, including a "addedDate" column - which has a timestamp, and can be used to order the collection how I want it. These extra columns are only showing for this one collection; new collections don't have it, nor do any of the existing collections. Enough of the epic background story! My question is: clearly, there must be some option somewhere to allow these extra columns to become visible. Does anyone know where this could be set? I've tried looking for config files or even files modified today that could be related, but for the life of me, I cannot find anything. If anyone can shed some light on how to get these extra columns visible in all collections, I'd be very grateful! |

I think you've accidentally stumbled upon something that no one else has reported. I do not know of any way to do intentionally what you've done. I was really picky about how I had my collections ordered in Reader Library and hate that they took the feature away in Reader for PC/Mac. As a result I switched to calibre where I have control over the order again.

I've never bothered with Reader for PC since I read about how bad it was. I took to figuring out Calibre to do what I want. Calibre works very well for doing what I want.

Hmm, what a shame *{:-(
It seems like only this collection is affected; I've tried repeating what I did, but can't hit the bug (at least, that's what I assume it was) that I previously hit. I wish I knew where I could tweak the config; there used to be a .xml file, but they appear to have changed that. Whatever method they're now using, it's still bloomin' slow! I've had a look at Calibre, but it's not immediately obvious how I would go about doing what I want to do, plus it means faffing around loading everything in, resyncing with my ebook reader, etc etc... I'm not sure I want to go through that hassle! I guess I can live without seeing the results on screen, as long as they come out in the reader ok. I really didn't think they could make the library software any worse, until I saw this newer (yet v1 vs v3 of the previous one?! *scratches head*) version! *headdesk* |

Calibre's always an option, but last time I attempted to use it (um, 2 years ago?), it didn't play well with my DRM'd epubs and as I said above, I'd rather avoid the hassle of setting it up and working out how I can get it to do what I want.
Frustrating, as with a tweak, the Sony software would do exactly as I wanted it to! *mutters* |

It works fine with DRM epubs now. You can't view them or convert them, but you can transfer DRM'ed books, metadata info, collection info, cover images, etc to the T1. The latest version of calibre is significantly improved with more features than 2 years ago. Doesn't hurt to give it another try.

You can also search for Apprentice Alf for assistance with DRM.
