what is going on in my county!!!???

it's almost like we are under a black cloud all of a sudden! in the last month a man flipped out in a tire store and got into a gun battle with the cops, and was killed. a third grader brought a gun to school in his backpack, and it went off when he set it down, shooting a classmate in the abdomen. a state trooper was shot and killed during a traffic stop, and the gunman after running, killed himself. a sailor crashed his truck into one of the inlets and died after being pulled out. a park ranger was killed in a head on collision on his way home.

this is a normally very peaceful little county and we are turned upside down!

In all likelihood, there's nothing odd going on. It's probably just chance that several bad things have happened close together. Or it might be that reporting of the bad events has increased. Or it might be that you have noticed these events more for some reason.

Random events have clusters.

's not me noticing it, it is making state and even national news. this is normally a very quiet peaceful area

In that case it's probably down to the clustering illusion.

So things will almost certainly now return to 'normal'.

My condolences to you, your neighbors and the rest of your county. I totally understand the difficulty people have in accepting that these are just coincedences. Yes, random theory and all that, but so many accidents leading to death and injuries...just seems impossible to happen so close together. And the impact reaches so far for each of these sad stories. Again, my condolences to you. Think positive thoughts and try to focus on good that occurs.

You just named five isolated incidents, out of all the incidents that happen around the country and around the world. Chances are, if your local media hadn't latched onto them, you wouldn't know a thing about them... any more than you would know about the 2 firefighters who were caught in a backdraft explosion in my area this weekend, one of which is still in critical condition.

Hearing about a number of moments at once always give the impression that "something strange is going on," but I assure you, there's nothing unusual about these incidents or their proximity to each other. Fortunately, they still number very low in terms of the actual percentage of people being hurt in such incidents. Media exposure always belies the fact that these things are actually more rare than you'd think.

So try not to panic or worry overmuch; but be alert, lest you become the next statistic.

I can't begin to tell you how incredibly unusual in this particular area these incidents are. our murder rate is maybe 4 people a year. vehicle fatalities are also extremely low. and I was hyper aware of everything except for the car crash because of police activity to include helicopters in the immediate area

We had the same problem where I live - usually a very low murder rate (less than 1 per 100,000) but over many years we have had 3 lots of "serial killings" which were highly publicised. Other places can have drive-by shootings, gang killings and whatever, but they always remember the bizarre ones (think of Jack the Ripper - still talked about). If you lived in Columbia no-one would have even bothered to write about your crime wave, but in a normally peaceful place it stands out like an elephant suddenly appearing in a shopping mall!

that's similar to here. this is NOT Seattle, Tacoma, etc., all along the I-5 corridor, this is the peninsula, a place where people do know their neighbors, don't lock their doors and so on. so it is extremely bizarre
