Hi from a wet south-east England

Hi all,

I'm not quite sure what to write here as I don't usually go in for these 'hello world' posts but since there were suggestions on the site to do so I thought I would write one this time.

I'm Paul from Essex in the UK and am a fairly new ebook user. I downloaded a lot of Project Gutenberg ebooks some years ago due to curiosity and I had a reader program on my old Palm organiser and my iPod Touch, but the tiny LCD screens meant I never actually got around to reading any books on them. I've owned a Kindle Keyboard 3g for about a month but must apologise to the authors on the forums as I'm probably going to remain a paper book only buyer and I got the Kindle purely to read classics and (legal) free books, and for the 3g web browser.

I read a lot of Terry Pratchett but my tastes are reasonably broad, including historical novels by Bernard Cornwell, natural history (I'm a bird/wildlife watcher and photographer in my spare time), thrillers, sci-fi and... well, anything that piques my interest really. So far on my Kindle I've read Taming Mighty Alaska: an RV Odyssey by William C Anderson, Three Men In A Boat by Jerome K. Jerome and am currently reading Charles Dickens' Great Expectations. Before that in 'paper book land' I'd had a long dry spell in my reading and had been reading Terry Pratchett's Snuff for absolutely ages so the Kindle has helped to get me interested in reading again.

Not sure what else to write really. I work in electronics, occasionally read science books like Stephen Hawking's Brief History of Time, I enjoy Simon Barnes' nature books (How To Be Wild is highly recommended) and own a lot of books about nature but haven't actually got around to reading most of them! I like a selection of good books to leaf through and tend to collect wildlife field guides (birds, plants, insects and so-on) and David Attenborough books.

Hi Paul and welcome to MobileRead. If you like historical novels, you should try the Flashman series. They're historical fiction but, nonetheless, very accurate and entertaining.

That was a GREAT introduction!

It's refreshing to have someone actually introduce himself here. After all, the forum is called - HERE GOES: Introduce Yourself.

Too frequently, someone will join and immediately tell us her problem without bothering to look around the site. That would be like inviting someone into your house, someone who immediately starts eating all the food without even saying hello! - it's rude behavior. Your post should be read by everyone here who violates these common courtesies.

I say to you: THANK YOU!

Take a look around the site and feel free to join in on any conversation that you find interesting. If you have any questions about policy, please PM a Moderator - we're green in color and we're happy to help.

Thanks very much Imogen, Cassidym and Don. I've seen those kinds of introductions on other forums Don, especially on a birdwatching forum I frequent, and it does seem very rude to post questions in the introductions part of the forum - not a good way to introduce yourself!

I think I've heard of 'Flashman' cassidym, will keep that in mind although with so many paper books on my shelf still to read and a rapidly expanding collection of classics and free books on my kindle I doubt I'll get around to those in all honesty! It's the same with my tv and film watching... I've tried to limit what I buy as the pile of stuff to watch just keeps growing and growing!

I need to break off from the Kindle for a bit to read some paper books soon - I'm going on holiday to Suffolk in May to stay near the Minsmere nature reserve (went there last year and it was wonderfully peaceful but also unbelievably rich in wildlife) and really want to finish reading Flying in the Face of Nature by Simon Barnes before I go, which I picked up in a secondhand bookshop in the village when I was there last year and is all about the area and its wildlife.
