Discharging reader
Following some advice on a thread here Sorry can't remember who or where)
I have been using my reader after the battery bar shows empty. This is the end of day 3 and the reader for the most part still works even though the battery symbol reports it is empty. Biggest downsides are that it has to go through the opening book process when I turn it on and my insane desire to recharge it. I have read 5 books and several short stories in this time, probably 12 hours of usage since battery showed empty. This I kind of incomprehensible to me. I am carrying on in the hope that this will reset the battery meter, but not understanding the reason behind this behavior. When I received the reader (Christmas gift) it would not turn on. Charged overnight with Sony charger and it worked fine. 6 days maximum usage with WIFI off before battery meter said empty. Usually started going to shut down as opposed to sleep mode on 1/4 battery meter so I would recharge then. Was that way before firmware update and fully charged before firmware update. Same behavior. I guess I should just take it back but hate to do that with a gift. Sorry to rant on so, but I am confused and befuddled. Helen |

Firstly battery indicators are not precisely accurate so having power available when indicator shows none, is not uncommon with anything using LI-Polymer batteries... secondly, if you do manage to run your battery as flat as possible then you will damage the battery - the run as flat as possible ideas are for NiCad batteries not Li based ones...

I think the idea is to drain it so next time it charges the meter will be more correct it makes sense and doing it once or twice shouldn't really effect the battery although it wouldn't be good to let it lie around completely empty for any great length of time.
MY laptop can do a battery calibration the exact same way it basicly drains all power completely before a full recharge to get the accuracy back. My only advice on the subject is to use a microUSB wall charger for recharging it as soon as you get it as low as you can as I've read some people had problems getting enough juice from a normal USB port |

It doesn't matter what the reason is, if you actually drain the battery even once then you can start crystallisation which is permanent damage to the battery... if you don't believe it then google technical info on LiOn and Li-Polymer batteries... the inventors and manufacturers are quite specific about this...
And unless you work really hard on it, you will find that your laptop full drain is NOT a full drain as the electronics in the batteries are designed to stop this happening... of course if you're determined and take the battery down to minimum charge then leave it without recharging then you can take it lower but this is NOT recommended by the battery manufacturers... Good thing I posted I guess.
I shall start charging it. Just an aside though. I have a PRS-600 which I use occasionally. I shut it down after charging and may not use it for a month. When I try to turn it on after even a couple of weeks the battery seems to be dead. No light flashes or anything. I plug it into USB and after a few minutes it shows opening book screen. Charges normally and seems to stay charged as long as ever. I hope that the battery on the PRS-600 is not being damaged as I don't think I will remember to charge it every so often when not using it. There's a lot of info on this on MR but I have always followed best practice advised here a while ago with T1, 3/650's, and Bookeen, which was ....
Never power off unless not using it for week + . Charge when down to 1 bar at lowest, and don't use on zero. Don't worry about overcharging, it won't, so overnight is fine. Use a wallplug, not PC. This improves the battery performance - every reader I've used this system on has greatly increased battery retain charge time - and it's life. Which, given the cost of replacing one should you need/want to seems to be A Very Good Thing. |

My car still goes when the tank shows empty, too.

Appreciate the advice.
I use a Sony wall charger for 350 and T1. Not the 600 so far. I use the 350 when travelling on bus etc. As it is nice size. I do not usually shut it down, but it shuts itself down if I do not use it for a few days. It too seems to use battery even if I do shut it down. Anyway I am not sure what to do about PRS-T1 as it's current battery life seems bad. Maybe 6 days, or around 1500 page turns with WiFi off and no SD card. My mother's kindle has much better battery life even with with on. Thanks for your help. Helen |
