A "different" kind of comparison

On a side note, DRM won't be much of a problem I think. I've heard that it can be removed fairly easily.

I'm curious, where do you live? That can affect the answer.

If you're not in the U.S., the advantages of limiting yourself to the Nook and the Kindle lessen somewhat.

I'm living in Turkey I have considered getting something else but the e-ink pearl thing was looking way too nice. And it's even hard(and expensive when compared to the original price) get a hold of these popular ones. The cheapers ones are simply not as good as them and the sony/iriver models etc. are much more expensive in comparison to these models.

I live in Bulgaria and I have no problems buying books from Amazon with my Bulgarian address. Granted, I don't own a Kindle yet and I download the books to my Kindle for PC, but I see no reason why Amazon would let me download books to the PC and not to a Kindle. It is strange that you live in a neighbouring country and you have georestrictions imposed.

Barnes and Noble are another story - I can't buy from them even if I provide a legitimate address in USA.

I have been unable to buy a single book from Google so far.

Kobo are OK and I buy most of my books from there. They don't have the selection of books that Amazon has, but still have a lot to offer. Besides, they often give discounts and promo coupons.

BooksOnBoard are also an option, but their prices are usually higher.

You can compromise and buy another reader without a Pearl screen. As long as it uses e-ink, it is still way better for reading than the screen of the computer.

It's been mentioned here before, but re: PDFs and manga. 6" readers like the ones you mention are probably going to be too small to comfortably read most PDFs and manga.

If you want to buy legal manga, also, you should look into iPad and Android tablets first, and for things like Viz's apps.

BTW, why are your friends who have the kindle happy with it if it's true that you can't buy anything from Amazon with a Turkish address?

I have absolutely no idea. Some use VPN services some just download torrent books and convert them. But none can use amazon properly.

You can certainly use Amazon from a different country than the US. Yes, it requires setting up a US address IF you want to have access to US-only books. But doing so is hardly difficult. A combination of a US shipping address, plus US Amazon Gift Cards bought with a non-US credit card, should get the job done. IME, Amazon doesn't particularly care so long as you are only buying eBooks. That being said, there are plenty of VPN solutions (I use "hidemyass.com") that work perfectly well for streaming video from Amazon, so I assume they will work equally well for convincing Amazon you're in the US to download your eBooks periodically, thus getting around any problems that might crop up.

Sorry, maybe (actually almost certainly!) I'm missing the point here, but why would you want to do that? Even assuming you could get a US shipping address, surely they'd send the books there, and then you'd have to have them sent on to whatever country you're in? That could easily double the cost of the books. Or is there another way around this?

Not anymore. If you buy using a gift card instead of credit card (and you can buy a gift card with any address, so you need two accounts, that's true), you can buy with any IP address.

For pBooks, yes. But people use an US address to buy e-books that are either not available in their country or far more expensive.

Actually it does not work. I just tried it and I can't redeem the $10 gift card.

Edit: It did work, eventually.

It does not work, after all. I managed to buy one book somehow by changing between two cards and addresses. When I tried to buy another one, it wouldn't let me download it, even though it took the money from my gift card.

i don't have answers, but would be the girl in room who would inevitably ask some really "cute" question because I don't understand tech, and who is unreasonably angry that it seems so hard to disseminate information.

is there a library work around? i have a few ideas on this, and hope to post more tomorow after the drs after which I will hopefully be happily drugged [vs in screaming agony, like now]. (i'm allergic to tylenol, so . . . )
